wait, would you like a card? I have been making coelacanth cards and also trying out wax seals (I haven't heard back from anyone I've mailed, so no idea if the mailable wax survives the postage journey). if so, pm me your mailing address!

You know what, I made a coelacanth related icon the day before you commented with this offer, which feels like a sign that I should take you up on this :)) (I mean, I enjoy getting cool things in the mail! But since I don't do holiday cards myself -- it's just not a traditional part of the holiday for me -- I never sign up for those types of things, and so mostly just get cards from people who have my address for other reasons. But coelacanth cards! :D

the stars aligned!

I kinda know what you mean. I wander through card shops after the holidays in the hopes of picking up steeply discounted things to cut and use in other projects, but they were ALL "punch you in the face with CHRISTMAS". Not even one was salvageable!

I shall send you a card!

Heh, yes, this too. Some years ago I was able to find some really nice winter holiday cards that were not even a little bit Christmassy -- they were things like glittery snowflakes and fuzzy mittens, and they were adorable -- so I'd been using them for sending New Year presents in the mail and Secret Santa exchange gifts, but lately I've not been able to find anything like that. After a lot of searching I did find some fairly decent snowman cards.

I shall send you a card!

Yay, thank you! :)

one thing that will always be a part of fandom for me because of my LJ roots is icons. Like, there's a rite of passage with a new fandom for me when it's gotten serious enough that I need an icon for it, and holding on to icons for old fandoms is a way of implying that those fandoms are still important to me.

I honestly don't have any other comment about this except YES EXACTLY.

I first got my paid LJ account so I could have icons

Yep, this too. (Truly the only reason I haven't yet switched over to DW is because I only have 15 icon slots there.) I really don't know why the icons are so important, but I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who feels that they are!

I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling this way, too, because it's certainly not a rational way of thinking but damn, it's real!

I actually came up with an analogy and then forgot to put it in my post, but I was thinking that finally having my icons on DW made the commenting easier and more...comfortable, I guess? And it's similar to what it's like when I'm talking to someone with whom I know I can code-switch into Russian. I am perfectly fluent in English! I can say all the things I want to say, to a suitable degree of precision, using English alone. Most of the time, I don't even use Russian when talking to most people who understand it, like my best friend, or B, or my brother, or my Russian-speaking flisters. But knowing that I can/i> switch into Russian, and have a whole additional set of nuances available to me, makes talking to people who are bilingual-like-me a subtly but importantly different experience. And having the icons for comments is like that, even if like 90% of the time I leave it on default ( ... )

Heh, I'm not sure I can fully appreciate your analogy, since I'm definitely still monolingual (in spite of all the languages I keep trying to study... maybe someday!), but yeah, there's definitely something about having icons that feels, as you said in your original post, "more like home." I think they really are almost like souvenirs or knickknacks displayed on some kind of imaginary shelf space, and I like seeing them there, and I like for other people to be able to "visit" and see what's on my imaginary shelves, too.

Ooh, I like this analogy, too, because it also works -- like, the difference between coming to visit my house, where I have all my stuff on the shelves and the walls, vs just visiting a hotel room I'm in -- I'm still here myself, of course, but the decor is not me at all :)

I am sorry i am so far behind...

The "i need an icon for this fandom" is so very true, and I also mainly spring for both accounts because of the number of icons.

I am so happy that the LJ iconmaker community is still alive (although it has seen a further decline last year, and I'm not sure it's going to be self-sustaining for long, but we'll see), and the DW surge really seems to be going strong indeed.

I am most happy that the Guardian fandom is there, and so very active, it is so wonderful to be part of that right now. Even if it's the last thing DW does, it will have been worth it.

Oh, and: Shiny! I will always use any excuse to talk about my icons! :D

I've been very pleasantly surprised by the longevity of icon communities on LJ! Long may they persist :)

Haha, me too! You have so many pretty ones! They are really well categorized / labeled, so here are three that I couldn't just figure out from the keywords / thought might have a deeper story :)

Thanks for choosing!

I won't talk about the second one in a public post (which is also why the keywords are so vague), but I guess I can always lock it...

I'll post it all to my journal (hopefully on the weekend).

Would you prefer I picked a different icon for #2? I'm perfectly happy to do that if you'd rather not expound on that one :)
