AFA again XD (this starcrossed love affair is a delight to follow! L makes such a perfect villain who keeps you apart XD XD)

I caved in and bought Shepherd's Crown this week, in a Wu bookshop. I purposefully avoided doing that for as long as I could but you can only postpone it so much *braces herself for the eventuality*

I love Gaiman but I could never warm to Pratchett ... I've read 3 or 4 and they're just not doing anything for me. Though I admit they were all from the Death subseries, I think.

Sometimes there's just an author/reader mismatch... I mean, I definitely have favorite and less favorite sub-series,but Death is pretty good, IMO, and also pretty typical, so after 4 books, if you haven't been "converted", it's probably not going to happen. If you really wanted to try more, I think you might enjoy the Watch books -- they tend to be more 'urban' and also are mysteries -- but I think it's likely you'd end up with the same result.

One day I will give Discworld another shot. I love Good Omens. But the only one I read from Discworld was Colour of Magic, which I know was not the best. The sheer number of books is a little intimidating. I also need to get over not reading books in order :)

Yeah, Color of Magic is definitely not a good predictor for the rest of the series.

I think the easiest way to 'tackle' Dicworld is probably to think of the individual subseries, which have more manageable numbers of books (e.g. 5 for Death, 8 for City Watch, which I think is the longest), or even to start with the standalones, something like The Truth (about newspapers) or Small Gods.

I also need to get over not reading books in order :)

Heh, yes. Considering that "order" is a very complicated flow chart in this case :P

This was a lovely post. I couldn't agree with you more about Terry Pratchett, he is a hugely important author for me. I got my first tattoo when he died - a lilac for "Night Watch" which is my favourite of his books. When I was a teen he lived near me and I used to chat to him in town fairly frequently and see him in the library where we perused the popular science section. He was as pleasant in person as he was in his books.

Oh my god, seriously, you were neighbors with Terry Pratchett?! And used to chat with him?!! That is SO unbelievably cool!

I've heard he was always exceptionally lovely at cons and such, and one of my regrets is that I never got to see him in person at anything like that. I'm generally not a cons/readings person, but there are just a couple of authors I'd love to meet/have met in person, and he's very much at the top of the list for the ones where it could've been possible.

I have not read any Discworld books since college...which was a very long time ago, haha. There are probably many new books in the series now. Some books I tend to read over and over(like LOTR and Good Omens), but somehow I never got around going back to Discworld. I should try them again.

Lots and lots of new books! And a number of them (since my college days, so even more since yours, probably!) are some of his best work, IMO.

I don't tend to reread the Discworlds much as complete books -- until recently, there was always a new one to read, or more old ones to catch up on. But even now, when I miss Discworld, I don't really sit down and read from beginning to end, but I search out favorite passages and lines, and reread those.
