It has been roughly a million years since my last reading roundup, even though I have been reading a bit. Trying to catch up on the writing up side of it:

29. Ben Aaronovitch, The Furthest Station (Rivers of London novella, # 5.7 according to Goodreads, which I guess puts it before The Hanging Tree?) -- cute, short and sweet, a sort of side story ( Read more... )

Wow, thank you for the reading list! I will have to check some of these out, when next I have a spare moment. (*considers Dissertation of Doom. Pencils in "read cool books" sometime in 2019*) Thanks to for the link to SKZB's interview. I am SOOOOOOO excited to read another Paarfi book; literally bouncing up and down here -- hopefully Tor will buy it sooner rather than later. Theresa is still editing his books, yeah? I have not been keeping up with the Making Light gossip.

You are very welcome! I especially highly recommend the Rivers of London series, if you haven't read them yet -- I think there's a lot of crossover appeal with Dresden Files fans, and the protagonist (a London policeman/apprentice wizard) is both an amateur science geek and a genre nerd.

I didn't think I would be so thrilled to learn there was another Paarfi book being written, but I really am. I wonder how/if it will tie in with the main story Paarfi has been telling so far / what glorious inconsistencies it will introduce into the universe :D

(I think TNH is still his editor, yeah, or at least I don't remember any news to the contrary. And if Tor doesn't buy it, I hope he goes the self-pub route -- it seems like the sort of book that would lend itself well to that, you know? Dedicated niche audience, I mean.)

Also, because I forgot to mention in my previous (got too excited by Paarfi, I guess):

""Barrayarans have a sort of stage-Russian accent as delivered by a British actor. Unless they're from one of the other three language groups."
"

This is because Illya Kuryakin was/is a thing. *snerk*

Oh, right! I knew there was inspiration from that quarter there (it's why I always misspell Illyan's name -- there's is only one L in actual Russian "Ilya"!), but didn't make the connection. :D

Have you ever read Jim Butchers AMAs on reddit? They're awesome

I think I've read at least one, and it was highly entertaining. I don't think I realized there were more -- I should probably go look!

Haha, I've never considered imagining Barrayarans as speaking like British stage actors playing Russians! I will have to try that next time I reread. XD

I had much the same experience with Lymond and his chronicles. I ended up devouring the entire series while on vacation in Japan, with great glee. My favorite books are 3 and 4.

I'm looking forward to more, especially with the assurance that Lymond himself continues to grow on one. :)

(Am rather curious about book 5, or whichever one it is that takes place in Russia. At last I might have a chance to actually follow along with the history, or at least be less-than-average confused by the names! :P)

Book 5 was my least favorite; it was cold and gloomy. I don't recall it well.

Book 3 is the most gloriously OTT melodramatic thing ever, until book 4 effortlessly tops it. And also includes canon gay in the form of an OTT trope straight outta fanfic. Truly amazing.

it was cold and gloomy

I suppose that's fitting!

OK, I'm well and truly intrigued about book 3 and 4! :)
