An assortment of fannish things!

1) fandom_stocking extended its deadline to Wed, 1/11. I am usually impatient to see all the goodies revealed, but this year I'm greatly relieved, because between the stockings going up pretty late, crazy work, holiday, and feeling sick, I haven't actually managed to do anything yet, beyond browse and take notes, ( Read more... )

fic rec, plan to read, snowflake challenge, firefly, killjoys, rivers of london, dresden files

I should check out Killjoys, it sounds like my kind of thing. Of course, I should also finish Dark Matter at some point, which is another Sci fi channel show that reminded me of Firefly.

I love Enemy Mine to pieces. I have a DVD of it now (Flight of the Navigator as well).

I love Enemy Mine to pieces.

Oh, cool! :D Did you see it in the Old Country theaters as well? :)

And, yeah, I think Killjoys would probably appeal! I'd say it's a bit darker than Firefly -- not in the sense of what happens, necessarily, because Firefly is plenty dark with Reavers, Niska, Hands of Blue, etc., but in how it comes across. Firefly feels more cheerful/lighter on the whole, and Killjoys is also more bloody (though not a gorefest or anything) -- which might just be times moving on and/or it being a Canadian show with different standards.

I saw Enemy Mine when I was 10, when I was on vacation near Leningrad. I think I saw it on tape but it definitely made a big impression. It is the first thing ever I saw in Sci fi where a species has one gender too. I saw Flight of the Navigator in the movie theater - everyone was really into what is really a kid's movie here.

Just watched a trailer for Killjoys. I know the two main actors from other things and I love Luke McFarlane very much ( I have a soft spot for him since 'Brothers and Sisters'!) So now I really want to check it out.

I for sure did not encounter Flight of the Navigator in Russia... not sure if it hadn't come to the theaters where I was / when I was still there, or if I'd passed on it for some reason (doubtful... I think I was going to see all the US movies, westerns, whatever).

It is the first thing ever I saw in Sci fi where a species has one gender too.

Pretty sure it was for me, too -- or at least I certainly can't recall an earlier example in my reading/watching.

Now I'm hoping even more Killjoys will be your thing! :D (Luke McFarlane is pretty great in it. My favorite character is the other guy, but McFarlane has a lot of really great scenes and a very poignant arc.)

I need to check out this Killjoys show...sounds like something I'd like! :D

Also...there are a bunch of books I need to pick up and series to finish. So many book, so little time.

I hope you enjoy Killjoys if/when you check it out. I liked the first season a lot, and hopefully will like season 2, also.

One of the great things about LJ is all the recs I get. The downside of that, of course, is that I end up with a much longer to-read list than ever before XD

My To-Read list on Goodreads doesn't even have all the books I actually want to read on it...and I doubt I'll ever even get half way thru...I'm usually adding more books to it each week than I'm able to read...just so I don't forget about them...haha

I'm actually glad I'm not using Goodreads to keep track of "to-read" stuff, because it would definitely grow unmanageably. At least this way, it usually takes a book being mentioned several times or living in my memory long enough for me to remember I wanted it on this list :P

Butcher's new book isn't bad :) but warning, it did take me till I was like 1/2way done with the book to actually start enjoying it

Thanks for the warning! I'm not sure I'll stick with it if it takes that long to start being enjoyable (steampunk isn't my thing anyway, and it seems like a pretty long book), but I do at least want to give it a shot.

hooray, a writeup! johnny is absolutely my favorite too - if there's a character tailor-made for me, it's him, with his cheerful martyrdom and practicality and surprise badassery and easy, unshakeable, solid trust in dutch. s2 shakes it up some - it's sadder, overall - but also adds a lot of layers, and i'm very interested in how you see it. and i love dutch, but i realize that i love her in conjunction with johnny, within the structure of their relationship ( ... )

Are there people whose favorite Johnny isn't, and what is wrong with them if so? :D (He is not even the type of character I normally fall for -- I would've expected D'avin to be more my type, probably, because I tend to have a thing for stoically fucked-up soldier boys, but Johnny just... he is such a treasure, with his taking care of everyone and, as you say, cheerful martyrdom, exactly.

until i realized that the show isn't peddling D'avin The Manly Dude to me, it's quite aware of D'avin The Human Disaster.I was apprehensive about that, especially D'av and Dutch UST early on (incidentally, one of the things I was pleasantly surprised by in the show is how readily the principals are shown sleeping with random people and it's not a big deal or a plot point, it's just, you know, of similar moral value to getting drunk -- something to do to take the edge off; IDK, maybe this is an artefact of watching a show that's not 20 years old for once, but I found it refreshing) -- anyway, I was apprehensive about D'av at first, too, especially ( ... )

s2 is definitely sadder and darker, and there's a couple storylines i could do without or at least wanted done in a different way. but there's a lot of funny/touching/badass/hot/amazing moments there - man, pree alone is worth a price of admission - and i think you will especially appreciate the development and resolution of khlyen storyline.

re: d'avin/dutch and the fallout; i'm actually very much in love with how the show approaches the usual tropes from unusual side. like, normally you'd expect the 'i stabbed you/i beat you/we fear you' angle, but here johnny doesn't give a fuck about the stabbing but is really angry about the fallout of their relationship, and dutch believes that he's innocent but is enraged about how he IS innocent, non-complicit in his dark past, unlike her (as she sees it); it was a wonderful little piece of complexity ( ... )

I'm now 2.3 episodes into season 2, and definitely agree about Pree! I always liked his cameos in the first season, and it was so great to see more of him! (and now I wanna know about his criminal/warlord past. I hope there's fic, at least!) And I think I like the way the Khlyen thing is headed, if that's not a misdirection. (Also, Khlyen being a badass and stone-cold ruthless is just kind of nice to watch.)

with how the show approaches the usual tropes from unusual side.

I agree! (Also, I just love the "Sorry for stabbing you. Thanks for not dying." exchanges between the brothers XD)

dutch believes that he's innocent but is enraged about how he IS innocent, non-complicit in his dark past, unlike her (as she sees it); it was a wonderful little piece of complexityYes, it is! Mostly Dutch works better for me on the pretty + ass-kicking than deep emotional level, but she really got me in that scene ( ... )

Enemy Mine high five! :D (I usually don't think about that movie, because it's been so long, but then I'll fall for a new "enemies having to work together" ship, and it all goes back to those roots, and all those original feelings come back)

I saw it so completely randomly in... late high scjool4school? Early college? And i fell in love. It never occurs to me to name it when asked but that movie is timeless and perfect.

That does sound pretty random, haha -- that would've been about 10 years after it came our, right?

But I can totally believe it would be a movie that ages well -- the story really is timeless!

(There's a book, too, a novella. I haven't read it, and am not sure if I want to or not -- if it would not live up to my memories of the movie or something. But I only learned it was an adaptation many years after falling in love with the movie version.)
