Uprooted won a Nebula ... yay ... I can use that for the bingo then as I'd planned on reading it anyway. Haha ...

Also - HP was the first book I pre-ordered as well, I think. Can't remember which one, though.

Yep, won a Nebula, and is nominated for a Hugo, also. Although from the buzz I've seen on my flist, it sounds like The Fifth Season, which is also nominated for a Hugo, might be the more deserving nominee (I haven't read it yet, but people seem to be blown away by it as opposed to pleasantly entertained by Uprooted). But, anyway, handy for your bingo needs :) (and it's a good, fun book -- I hope you will enjoy it!)

I think HP was the first "phenomenon" book I experienced -- I, and many other people -- so that makes a lot of sense. Plus I guess it kind of hit during Amazon/the internet's growth years, too, when pre-ordering became much easier.

I don't know The fifth Season but Jemisin would be good for the author of colour square ... ;-)

She would! The Fifth Season is supposed to be really depressing, but really good. I'm intrigued by it because it seems to be the book that people who did not love Jemisin's previous books (which I am among) are really impressed/blown away by. So maybe it will work the same for me...

Doubt very much he meant it. He was probably drunk at the time, or thought he was dying, or something else stupid.

AHAHAHA, accurate.Totally pinching this meme.

I think book playlists are like fanmixes? Not that I have actually looked at any to work this out, that's just what I assumed. It may be more of a "listen to this while you read" thing, but yeah, I don't really listen to music while I read either.

It was a fun little meme! And had the advantage of being fast, unlike the other versions of a random character meme I know.

I think book playlists are like fanmixes?

Huh. I've encountered fanmixes for book fandoms, of course, but usually centered on a character or a theme rather than a book as a whole. And the other thing I've seen playlists used for in reference to books are the AUTHOR's playlists -- i.e. what they listened to when they wrote the thing. Which is an interesting concept

Actually, heh, now that I'm thinking about it, one book series I can think of that has an actual honest-to-goodness playlist -- with links to YouTube videos in the back -- is Lia Silver's Prisoner and Partner, who have a DJ as a protagonist, and thus an actual soundtrack of sorts :)

SRB's The Demon's Lexicon

*raises hand* I've read that one. Only the first one, though. I liked the twists and felt it worked well as a one-shot, but I didn't feel like reading more. Also, I knew there was a different POV in every book and I would have gone for it if one of the books had been from the POV of the gay brother (Jamie?), but it was not to be.

The sequels are pretty good (and worth reading, IMO), but I do think the first book is the best of the lot, and works fine as a one-shot.

Jamie is the gay brother, yep, and you're right that he doesn't get a POV -- although he does get an interesting story arc (and a boyfriend, although I don't think their relationship is a popular one in fandom).

The other POVs were interesting -- Mae's in book 2 made me appreciate her quite a bit more, and I liked getting a look inside the head of a previously minor character, with Sin in book 3, but I have to agree with the criticism that that POV was not well chosen for the actual PLOT of the story.

I'm increasingly skeptical that I'll still care about Winds of Winter by the time it comes out, which is sad.
Oh, I know this so much... Not about this particular book, but the feeling itself. There is plenty of things, mostly books, that got 'wasted' to me this way and I wish I could have read them when I really wanted them. Not for the sake of the books themselves, but for the enjoyment I could have had then and I wouldn't have now.

Yeah -- it's similar, though not quite as acute, when I come across a book that I know I would've loved 10-20 years ago, if only I'd met it sooner, but at this point it either doesn't work for me, or I wish it were a little different/more to satisfy present-day me.
