Reading roundup: Victorian edition

24. Natasha Pulley, The Watchmaker of Filigree Street -- I first heard about the book through ikel89, and then other people on my flist posted about it, as people will around K, and since I seem to be on a slightly-paranormal Victorian kick at the moment, this seemed like a good time to pick it up. My first impression of the book was gentle and ( Read more... )

Bear laughs the hardest over Biggus Dickus too.  I think it's a boy thing. I saw Life of Brian for the first time when I was deep into studying Latin and the grammar scene was the funniest scene ever. I think it still elevates Life of Brian into my favorite Monty Python movie.

There is an orchestra/operatic version of Life of Brian that was done for the Proms in England. It's on DVD. And I have a CD of it. I highly recommend it. It's called 'Not the Messiah  (he's a very naughty boy)'.

Haha, could be! XD (I mean, I laugh too, for sure, but it's not THE funniest thing in the movie for me). O dug up a YouTube video of the Biggus Dickus scene and has been watching it again XD

Life of Brian is my favorite Monty Python movie, too! And as the Latin scene is my favorite scene, that probably contributes to it in large degree, too. The movie definitely has tons of other great stuff going for it, also -- the bureaucracy of the of the Judean People's Front, "What have the Romans ever given us?", the schisms within Brian's followers, "How shall we fuck off, O Lord?", the stoning (which was another bit the rodents laughed at a lot). But the Latin lesson still cracks me up the most.

I did not know about the operatic version! I found it on Amazon and shall have to listen to it posthaste! Thanks for letting me know about it :)

but for now she's annoyed at the off-brand Harry Potter-ness of Simon Snow :P

Well, that's the point of the book. XD Though it's true that A Hero At The End Of The World seems more like an original story than Carry On, for all that they're both Harry/Draco-based books.

I would agree that the off-brand Harry Potter-ness is the point of *Carry On*, but Fangirl, not so much. Or, at least, those bits were the least interesting for me in Fangirl.

this is an interesting choice of movie for 'erev Easter' XD

Hah. I approve of this Easter event. XD

I'd probably follow suit, in fact, except that I actually only own Life of Brian on VHS tape. Should probably do something about that...

It worked out quite well! XD

I wasn't sure we actually owned a copy -- the first one was also on VHS -- but turns out B had bought a DVD on Amazon at some point, and dug it up at L's request.

Haha, that's awesome! We might have to make an actual tradition out of it... Judging by the way the rodents keep quoting from it, they're not going to object!

I tried reading Etiquette and Espionage, but I just couldn't get into it :/ I didn't get very far with it.

Is L reading Fangirl because of cool friend A?

And Biggus Dickus, LOL, that still cracks me up :P

Nope, different friend this time, but she sounds pretty cool, too.

I actually liked E&E better than the Alexia books by Carriger, but she is overall an author it takes some effort for me to read, not one that I really click with.

I was also laughing at Biggus Dickus, of course, and especially the part where he actually shows up later on in the movie.
