55. Benedict Jacka, Veiled (Alex Verus #6) -- OK, this was a fun book, but the whole time I was thinking how Alex's sudden enlistment in the Keepers felt suspiciously meritricious to me -- not on Alex's part, on Jacka's part. Like, magical cops are hot now, let's make Alex a Keeper. (This would cross my mind less if Jacka were less of a magpie ( Read more... )

who steals french fries off the other’s plate
Locke. Or he tries to, anyway. He made fun of Vlad's home-made french fries because they weren't elaborate by the standards of Camorri cooking arts, and as a result didn't get served any. But they smell really delicious! So Locke attempts a con game to distract Vlad from the fries on Vlad's plate so he can taste some, but Vlad, of course, is familiar with this sort of thing and has Loiosh and Rocza guarding the fries and hissing nastily while Vlad himself plays meaningfully with a knife. (He is going to let Locke have some fries as soon as Locke admits the superiority of Fenarian cuisine.)

who jokingly moves in for the kiss when someone asks if they’re a couple
Apparently intimations of homosexuality are insults in Camorr? In any case, this seems to be the kind of thing that Vlad would be more of a smartass about, so him.

who has to bust or bail the other out of jailOh, that's beautiful! Vlad has been caught and questioned a couple of times before, so he's more likely to end up in jail, ( ... )

Oooh, a Camorri-Easterner cook-off! I'm sure there would be a LOT of underhanded stuff - switching ingredients (hell, poisoning ingredients, depending on who's going to be eating it), stealing/spoiling things, "oops, the stove suddenly erupted into flames when your dish was almost done cooking, what a shame," etc. But yeah, I'm sure that both of them would gladly die before admitting the superiority of the other cuisine. But man, if/when they get past that stage, a joint dinner would be beyond fantastic.

In any case, this seems to be the kind of thing that Vlad would be more of a smartass about, so him.
Plus, it would divert attention from him and Morrolan (and/or Locke and Jean, who I'm sure get a lot of similar comments). ;)

probably something where Locke is a busy merchant annoyed that his good-for-nothing idiot servant managed to get himself thrown in jail over another dumb ( ... )

Ooh, yes! Not, like, deadly poison, maybe, but definitely a laxative or something. And I love the whole dueling-cooks heist episode you're proposing -- would read/watch the hell out of this!

Heh, point!

Yeah, I think Norathar would win, especially as she's used to Easterners and wouldn't underestimate one (unlike many Dragaerans), while Jean has never fought a 7-foot-tall Elf before. But it would be a challenge!

Basically I now want crossover fic more than ever!

(And now I'm also kind of wondering what Jean would make of Paarfi's histories, given his in-universe literary tastes. Hmmm.)

Ooooh, I would read the shit out of that! I think there was a bit in RSURS where he actually defended expy!Shakespeare from charges of Paarfi-like verboseness and, er, literary-ness.

Yes, I was thinking of his liking for what's-his-name the playwright.

BTW, I'm not sure if you have time to read your flist beyond comments, but I'm just going to throw this meme answer at you, because you're one of like three people in the universe who knows both characters -- I got prompted with Thomas Nightingale & Morrolan for the autumn meme I was doing in my last entry. :D

See, this is the reason cross-pollination is so important, fandom-wise! I tried to get all the way through my flist last night, but unfortunately it ended up with a sort of "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is spongy and bruised" situation. XD So now I'm finishing up today and, wow, talk about your perfect duos! Thomas might be one of the few Easterners who can actually impress Morrolan. Off to read it now!

Miraculously, I hadn't though of Nightingale and Morrolan, and/or they didn't come up on my crossover character memes in that combination before, but it really would be such an interesting duo! They are both formidable (to put it mildly), both with a strong sense of responsibility for protecting others, and both willing to learn new things, which would make for an interesting dynamic!

(It also occurs to me that I never tried sorting the RoL folks into Dragaera houses somehow... Peter is one of the classic Tiassas -- which, judging by Khaavren, is not a bad thing for a cop to be -- and Nightingale strikes me as a noble Lyorn sort. Varvara is probably something like a Tsalmoth, inasmuch as we know anything about what a Tsalmoth is like... And I wouldn't even hazard a guess about Lesley at this point... Jhegaala? Yendi? something more straightforward, like a Dragon?)
