Reading and watching

11. Karen Healey (karenhealey), Guardian of the Dead -- I'd been hearing good things about this book and vaguely meaning to check it out for a while, and then I started thinking of what I wanted to read for the "book set in a place I've wanted to visit for a long time" bingo square, and New Zealand is pretty much at the top of my travel bucket list (OK, maybe ( Read more... )

Heh - the PTerry collection sounds ... interesting. :D

On a semi-related note: correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this basically the adaptation of The True Meaning of Smekday? The bits they show in the previews (which we've seen quite a bit of at this point, from going to the movies and occasionally on TV) really didn't ... uh ... smack of Smekday, but once I started focusing on the details, like "Boov" and "Tip" - then I realized it kind of had to be. Funny that they didn't keep the title, though - I thought adaptations usually did?

It is! We learned about it from the Smekday sequel, and, yeah, I probably wouldn't have guessed otherwise because of the very non-descript name. I'm somewhat skeptical about the thing, but still looking forward to watching it on Redbox. (If you see it before then, will be very curious to hear what you think, since I doubt very many people who will watch it are familiar with the book!)

I just skimmed the Pratchett ones, to avoid spoilers, but Rincedwind, Feegles and sketches? I think my fiancé and I want to pick up the prose book, too...

I think this is a good book for a serious Pratchett fan, definitely! The actual Discworld stories are quite good (especially "Sea and Little Fishes" and "Troll Bridge", IMO), the non-DW Death story reads like something that could've been a Good Omens outtake -- it's got the same feel of DEATH in the real world that the DEATH-y bits of GO do, the really early prose is neat from a historical perspective, the sketches bits are interesting like that too. I'm very happy I bought it when I encountered it!

Angel really picked up towards the end of the season. Think JW said 'hell with it!' and just had fun. Silly Angel is the best Angel...and damn...I knew I'd seen Hawkeye elsewhere! Wow!

All these characters will grow and change radically yet slowly. You will be hella surprised by the end of it!!

*HUGS*

I highly recommend Uncle Tungsten by Sacks - a childhood autobiography/history of chemistry and his most personal book.

Ooh, this sounds very relevant to my interests -- thank you for the rec! (I didn't really get a feel for Sacks the man from Hat, but this one gave me more of a glimpse, and I'm curious to learn more, I find.)

He's a bit of an odd bird himself, which I find endearing.

Yes, he is -- and I feel the same way. Comments below mentioned that apparently a full-blown memoir of his is coming out shortly (On the Move: A Life), if that would be interesting to you as well.

I liked it! And it gave me a feel for New Zealand, too, so I think it worked pretty well for the square. I hope you enjoy it if you do read it! :)
