I seem to have recovered my high fantasy groove...

51. Sherwood Smith, The Fox (Inda #2) -- Yes, I'm done with it! I started this book at the beginning of the year, and things were going at a good clip until I apparently had my fill of ships. (Something very similar happened with Locke Lamora #2 last year, and I'm starting to suspect may have also ( Read more... )

Hmm forgot a lot of the things in that book ^^

Tau's my favourite too!!

The handle of the diversity of sexuality was indeed something that impressed me. Forgot if there was any positive PoV on BDSM latter on, I'm afraid.

The cast and field of action have widened so much, it's really hard to keep track of everything! (which is why I'm embarking on #3 right away, before I forget who all the minor characters are...)

Yeah, both the cultural variation and the personal variation and societal and personal perceptions of those variations are all in there, whithout it being intrusive or feeling like there's A Very Special Message, and that's so rare! (Like, I think the diversity is actually as broad or broader than in the Kushiel stuff, but there that is the *point*, where here it just sort of *is*, which I find more interesting, and rarer.)

I did! And I'm planning on starting #3 right away, before I forget all the secondary characters and who is from what country and headed where XD

Mostly I don't find him very interesting, because he's so hung up on things that are a lot less important than the things other people in his universe are dealing with, but the scenes between him and Inda after the captivity at Wafri's were really nice. He seemed to have actual awareness of people who weren't him for a change!

the blatantly sexual overtones in the world where rape seems to be an non-existentThat is a really interesting point, actually! And, actually, the clear instance of sexual coercion I can think of is Tau with Coco (well, OK, that was extreeeeemly dubious dubcon rather than outright rape, but still), and, yes, the clear sexual overtones of Wafri torturing Inda. Huh ( ... )
