Yeah, the love triangle was pretty lame, especially as it wasn't even much of a triangle -- like, it was pretty clear that Simon never had a chance, and Jace was awful to him nevertheless.
I like the Lightwoods for the same reason! Reformed Death Eaters (who are still viewed with suspicion) sounds about right. And also, Hodge >> Wormtail.
Magnus is great. He is the only reason I'm considering maybe possible reading the Clockwork Angel prequel thing.
remember that these characters are teenagers, and teenagers are more likely to fall into the Pit of Despair over breakups.
Yeah, while I found Clary's depression upon the breakup with Jace annoying, I did find it fairly understandable, and I thought it was handled OK.
You make an interesting point about the lake and Calry maybe (literally) seeing it in a way no-one had before. Still... it was one of the things in the series that felt really obvious to me, and so it was a bit annoying when it was supposed to be this great secret revelation.
