i recieved bad news from the vet. he said that the lump/bump is probably either a fatty tumor or a cancers one. he said the hamster is older and that putting them to sleep it's really a good idea. that he could just die from being put to sleep. he said that if it was a cancers tumor he would probably die within a short period of time. since he didn ( Read more... )

Maybe you should get a second opinion. I took one of my hamsters to the vet whe n she began losing weight, and he spotted a tumor on her that I didnt even notice and knew right away it was cancerous.

Well from what you have posted here I think you should wait a see what happens with the ham. If he’s acting normal and doesn’t look to be any pain then maybe you can just keep a close eye on him to see if is nature changes a bit. If not them maybe we are dealing with a fatty tumor and he will be fine.

If you do notice him acting sick you could decide from there to let him pas naturally or bring him into the vets at that point and have him put to rest. Im sorry to hear the news, I have my fingers crossed its nothing life threatening.

yea, he's not acting sick at all. he's acting and doing everything he should be. which is why i was so undecided on what to do.

i don't really have the money to have anything done. but i'm willing to do it if i have to. i'm not the kind of person that can let something die if it doesn't have to. i'm just affraid if i have anything done he will die anyway. i would rather not be the reason for his death. i once had a frog operated on because it swallowed a piece of bark and would die if i didn't. hehe, everyone makes fun of me for having a frog operated on.

Ya, if he’s acting normal then I would just let him be for now and not risk the operation. It does cost money and would it be worth it? It might turn out that you had a hamster that could have lived long with a benign tumor but died in surgery. On the other hand you could, as easily figure out if it was cancerous and the hamster started to show signs of illness at which point you could make the choice to have him put to rest humanly.

But if it were me and the hamster was acting normal and healthy I would let it be and just keep a close eye on it.
