Tonks HATES the hamster ball. She'll sit in it and glare at everything that walks by. She refuses to move at all. She really likes being able to run around on her own, though. She wriggles and gets all excited and her ears perk up and her eyes are bright and shiny. To keep my hamsters happy I generally try to keep their experiences varied and interesting - they have some sort of routine but I try to not let them become bored. Give them a new toy, take them somewhere they haven't been before. (The rug, your bed, the couch - just let them experience many different things.)
That's exactly what mine do, too! They glare! It's so funny! I let mine roam around on various surfaces, too, and it really seems to make them happy. Of course, then they never want to leave. :p
Sounds like you should have some happy hammies there. I used to notice that if I took Fred or Stitch directly from the cage and put them in the ball, they wouldn't run. But if I hold them for a few minutes and let them wake up, it's like they "activate" and then they want to run. Not sure if that would work or if your hammy just hates the ball, but it's worth a try I guess.
My Liquor doesn't like the balls much either. She just lays in it by the doors, or by my feet. That is when I think she's happy. For many reasons 1) She isn't locked up in her cage. 2) She has a lot more freedom than in the cage. 3) She probably just likes the idea of being out in the open, but doesn't bother to run because she wants to just let it by all around her, making her content/happy. I have a strong urge to make a ham-city out of lego for her. "I'm a small ham, in a big city!"
