HELP!

Basically, checked my wee yin after a few days of having not seen her and one of her eyes was glued shut! The other one looked tired with a black ring around it. She's a white russian, 2 years old and a bit. I know she's at that age, on her way down hill but still shat a brick when I saw her. Played with her a bit and she seemed dead lethargic and ( Read more... )

I once had a rat on the verge of death surrendered to me and what I did was I got him a nice blanket to snuggle up into, some baby food [get a veggie one for your hammy] and I put a little water into a small lid or bowl for him to drink out of. This seemed to help his ability to eat and drink on his own until I could get him into the emergency vet that night.

Yikes, hopefully your vet appointment is soon. I would say for now, put all of her food wherever she is (if she's been sleeping in her house, leave her food there) and maybe try to spoon feed her some baby food or weight gain food (like Ensure) every once in a while. Also, bring the water bottle over occassionally. I've had hamsters act like this suddenly and then pass, and others who just suddenly 'aged' heavily one day and survived for months. It's really bizarre, but small animal health just turns around at the drop of a hat.

Overall though, let her be alone now.

My girl has aged massively in the past month, stopped running on her wheel, lies still in the ball, everything...but she's still bitey when annoyed, still eats a good amount, and is still generally okay. She went from fine to old lady in about five minutes, it seems.

I'm sorry for the news. Sounds like she is getting on in life now. I would bath the eye with some warm water on a cotton wool pad to open it up. I had to do that with one of my girlies! I would give her lots of cuddles and make sure she can get to her water easily. Some baby food might be good. Anything without onion and garlic in would be fine. You could try a bit of pasta or boiled egg, try and get some protein in her plus it would be a little treat for her. Also so porridge might be good for her.!

If the cage has any levels in it i would take it out and make sure everything is close to her on one level, and let her get lots of sleep.!

Hope she gets a bit better keep us posted!
