How well do hamster potty things work? I'm considering setting some up in my hamsters cages.

(because, dear god, I have six cages and one giant fish tank to clean a month. Anything, anything to help.)

Usually you can't train a hamster to use it after you've had them for so long. I had mine for 6 months (they were a year old by that time) and they looked at it and peed in OTHER corners. I tried and tried but they never bothered. You have to start them early or else they'll never learn.

Yeah, I agree, you have to start them out early. Mine is "potty" trained though. The way I trained her was that I found out where in the cage she liked to go. When she went, I filled up her potty with the hamster litter and put the soiled bedding into the potty and stuck the potty into the corner. She then "got it" and started going in the potty. She still goes there. I've never really had a problem with her not going in the potty. But then again, I got her when she was still fairly young. I hope this helps you out some! Good luck!

damn. Well, it sort of does. I wanted to get one for my panda who leaves a mess all over his cage. But I've got two brand new dwarves that I could probably start with.

You could always try it. You never know until you try to do something. What's the worst that could happen? If you've already got a few hammies that could be trained then you're not losing anything right? Try it and see... Your hammie might like it and dig in it just for fun but may also go in it if you put the soiled bedding in there and stick it where your hammie is used to going. You never know until you try though!

I got the potty for my girl hamster, Poppy, when she was a baby. I thought it would work pretty well, cause I've heard good things about it. But all she did was tip over the potty and EAT the litter! It's non-toxic so it wasn't a big deal, and she only ate a few pieces. I might try it with another hamster of mine, though.

Penfold was about 6 months old when we got his litter tray. He didn't understand what it was for until we replaced the litter with some bathing sand... not he uses that for digging in and as a litter tray :)

I am trying to potty train my two hamsters - I have only had them a month. I bought one of those potty things and its too big for my Teddy Bear so I gave it to the dwarf. For the teddy bear I made a little litter pan - I hope it works.... Just started trying this past week! Good luck on your trys as well!
