If you think that anyone can be guilty of making a racist comment or performing a racist act, including you, and that you are willing to take ownership of your statements and actions, resist blaming the person who was offended, figure out why they were taken as racist, apologize, and not do it again, post this exact sentence in your journal.Not ( Read more... )

Thank you hammercock, for taking this stand with us against racism and other forms of oppression. Thank you thank you thank you. Each and every bit helps make the world a little better and a little safer and less ignorant.

As Expanded Horizons' editor, I would also like to out the word out that we are always in need of speculative fiction submissions which reflect thoughtful, authentic expressions of human diversity. We actually need more material right now, or else we will have to skip April's issue. And that would be very sad.

All well and good, but how do we avoid swinging to the other extreme, where any statement can be banned because someone finds it offensive (regardless whether that offense is sensible or unhinged)? (As an example of the latter, there are various "white rights" groups that are seriously unhinged on racial issues. Ironically, most of them are people who are shat upon (PoSU?), but for white-ethnicity and social-class reasons rather than racial reasons.)

I am also resisting proposing we define "POW" ("People of Wank")...
