bigots running for office

They're everywhere this year, sadly, and they're louder, more obnoxious, and more brazen than they have been in a long time.

The one I just heard on "Talk of the Nation" is Carl Paladino. I won't be doing him the favor of linking to his campaign web site. If you want to get some idea of who he is, you can read this NY Times article from earlier Read more... )

racism, radio, politics, wtf

The good news, if there is any, is that I understand his opponent is polling way ahead of him.

Go to Account Settings and enable Cyrillic services, then go to the Paid User shop and look for the Custom Userheads link. thespian alerted me to this the other day. :)

Progress is always met with backlash. The amount of progress can be roughly judged from the size of the backlash, even. So having huge backlash right now means that we've made huge progress. :-) We have an African American president, a Latina on the Supreme Court, and lots of progress in other areas. The backlash is a sign of how well we're succeeding.

Does that help at all?

I'd like to think that, but honestly I think this guy is just a douche.

Yes, of course he is. But why is a major party running him for office is the question. We'll always have jerks, but they're usually hiding under rocks a bit more than they are now. Something's brought them out. :-)

I don't buy that at all, considering what whiny little bastards the conservatives were when Dubya didn't get every last one of his judicial nominees when like 4 or so of them didn't make it, as opposed to the 60 or so that Mr Bill had blocked previously. They want it all, and they feel that they're entitled to it. :P

The GOP is of the opinion that the Tea Party will sweep them into major gains this midterm election. However, they are perhaps not accounting for the general dislike the Tea Party has for most politicians generally and the disgust that some more virulent Tea Party candidates generate in the electorate. They are doing the wrong kind of pendulum swing right now, and while they may still get some power back in their grubby corrupt hands it will not be the sweeping mandate they want to claim.

They might take the House; they will not take the Senate; and after redistricting is done in many states there's a decent chance they will lose House seats in 2012. OK, I might be wrong, but this is my current firm prediction for the midterm.

Tea party candidates are likely to be no more loyal to Republican interests than an independent. This means the when Republican Whip calls to get their support for a bill it might not go as well as they had hoped.

Having the tea party take over Republican seats probably won't help the Republicans very much in the long run.

Unfortunately Andrew Cuomo's large lead is shrinking, possibly because some voters resent what they regard as his fait accompli coronation. If the Cuomo campaign needs to go negative Paladino has provided plenty of ugly material they can quote.

In addition to his bigotry Paladino's vision of government is scary. He plans to fire all state workers and then rehire as few of them as he can get away with for a fraction of their former pay and without benefits.
