the blocking begins

We began blocking the opening number of The Gondoliers tonight. I don't have a lot of experience with such things, but it seemed fairly complicated to me. The stage layout concept diagram looks pretty interesting (with canal and gondolas and bridge), but it'll take some time for me to visualize. That number is always complicated. It doesn't become painful until either half the chorus can't remember their blocking (or didn't write it down, or weren't there), or the set design turns out to not be what the director thought and he has to reblock on the fly during sitzprobe, or the director changes his mind. And yes, I've been through a G&S number similar to the opening to Gondoliers with each of the above...and survived (and I didn't kill anybody either).

Ugh, yeah, we did not have all members present yesterday, so there will have to be some shepherding. I guess it's bound to be complicated when the opening number is like 17 minutes long and 56 pages of score. :)

Hee. :) Given the crazy rehearsal schedule, I probably won't see much of you until we start dress rehearsals. It'll be great to see you for makeup, though!
