You may want to find out whether they had speed limits during the time period your story is set in, in the Southwest. Montana didn't establish speed limits for a long long time, until the federal government said they weren't going to give money for roads to states that didn't standardize their speed limits to 55. Because they were open sky roads, most people I knew growing up (including my truck drivin' daddy) drove in the 70s when whizzing through there ( ... )

Extra time makes sense! Also, consider A/C (I think it was around then, but out of reach for most people). That could be a scorching hot-assed drive w/ lots of hydration stops/pee breaks, depending on the time of year. I thought the weather was unbearable in February & Alyona thought that was pretty damn funny. ^^

Time of year, I would imagine it to be late summer/early fall - I've decided it's dry weather - but the car drive is taking place at night, midnight - one in the morning, something like that.

Don't forget the condition of the roads! How many of the current main routes were paved back then?
