I did something similar last year--logged into LJ to make a post--a good multiple years since my last one. This remains an artifact of my twenties and the best way to access what I was thinking/feeling/going through at the time. Still haven't found a long-form replacement for LJ--if you have any good suggestions, let me know.
Every once in a while, yeah. I used it when I first moved to China because, since it's owned by a Russian company, it's not blocked. Then I could reflect my posts to Facebook from there.
And then I learned about VPNs so I didn't need it.
