You only have to sound a little bit "other" for people to hear it as really different.
And there was one guy from somewhere in the tidal South who complained that I was pronouncing the intern's name the same way as his.
"But they ARE pronounced the same," I said.
"No, mine is Don, and hers is DOH-wan."
And I actually said, "If I were from New Jersey, maybe." Or maybe any Northeastern area? That sound he was making for "Dawn" was the same vowel sound some people back East use for "caught."
Which, on my coast, sounds exactly the same as "cot." Just like those two names sound the same. :O
