Last Tuesday, HalfshellHusband had a blackout fainting episode at the house, and fell. He hit his head (no concussion), and he fell hard on his hip... which has several cracks at the top of the femur. No surgery so far, but he could be pretty immobile for the next three months or so.

/o\This is the third major broken bone recuperation in less than ( Read more... )

Oh, wow. This is such a blow. Especially after having had his surgery. And I can imagine that it's so hard on you having to pick up the slack. You poor things, both of you. Huge hugs and I hope he heals quickly, if that's possible, and that you can get a bit of a break to get away.

It's so sad-- he had the other hip replaced a year ago, after recovering from the broken wrist (the hip pain started about when the wrist pain faded). So, he's going through the healing on the current hip at less than a year from when he got out from under the first one.

It's just emotionally exhausting, not to mention all of the extra work it creates for both of us.

Thanks for the good wishes. *hugs*

Oh GAH :sigh: If it's not one thing it's another. How's he doing right now? And YOU? There are times I wish I had a magic wand so I could wave it and everything would be OK. This is one of them. Hopefully HSH can heal quickly from all this :HUGS:

He says it's less painful than the full replacement, but at the same time... he doesn't really have pain relief other than aspirin. So, at times it keeps him awake most of the night, and at the end of the day he just reaches a point where he wants to lie down and hope for at least a little sleep to blot things out.

I wish I had that magic wand, too! I would have fixed the dizziness/balance problem, because we knew the risk of falling was extremely high, and sure enough...

Just hoping it's less than the three months of recovery he was told last Friday. :(

I am really so sorry to hear this. I just had a small taste of being a caretaker this spring when my mom and her broken arm was staying with me. It was tough, but at least she could get around on her own. Sending you many good thoughts.

It's so hard working full time and trying to keep on top of the house/chores/etc. by yourself.

HSH broke his wrist about 2 years ago, and he was more mobile during recovery from that. He got C-Diff then, though, which created a completely different problem. The hip is awful, though, because it's not just one leg-- it's being careful about what you do with both legs, either for alignment of tendons and such, or here... because there are multiple breaks in that bone, and you don't want them to shift around or the surgery will become a must. :(

His cardiac physician did a drastic re-review of his medicines on the phone the day after his fall. I wish she'd been more motivated to do that earlier, since he'd been complaining about serious dizziness/balance problems for about 4 months now!

Really, both blackout fainting episodes happened on her watch, and both led to broken bones (the previous one was the fall off the bike). It reminds me of my Dad's situation, his last 5 years or so. If you take heart medications that lower blood pressure as a side-effect, you need to use extra care when the patient either already has low blood pressure (HSH) or is taking meds for that (my dad). The cumulative combination is just dangerous.

Thanks so much for the prayers and good thoughts. I wish we had more family nearby, but HSH's brother is spotty in helping (he's in town), and my brother is an hour away... and recovering from a really horrible bout with shingles. We're going to have to hire a housecleaner to cope with this. *sigh*

We hired a house cleaning service after hubby retired.

It is a lot easier to keep up once you have the house cleaned.
