Oh, I know these tenants. I know them well enough that even tonight I felt pretty guilty reading this. It's funny the way that Impulsivity has been subletting to all kinds of really great people.
I know these tenants all too well! And I wish Stress would behave better, but when he's continually invoked with no end in sight, I understand the lack of discipline.
The MTTSS (mean time to spider-solitaire) numbers are a fairly accurate indicator of how well or badly things are going, sadly. :(
At least the renters aren't fighting over much besides the remote. They're not working together either (or even working that well on their own), but at least they aren't fighting...
The tricky part with crack is usually the same-- introduce while obfuscating, but not so much that when the real context becomes clear, the reader says, "Huh?"
yes this! You almost got me as I was really taking it at face value and then as I remembered you mentioned the return of crack and was waiting for it- the "aha" was good enough to make me read it over to find the double meanings in the first part
I used to think of my brain as being under the control of miniature mes, but it was more like the bridge of a starship than a roommate share. This is brilliant! Even if it did give me flashbacks to my days living with those I wasn't married to.
Yes, why is the brain not as well-behaved as we want it to be?!?
As we get older, we gain cognitive abilities and maturity, and you would think there would be huge increase in control... but at the same time, the quantity of separate traits and responses and parallelisms and the growth in complexity serve to undo much of what we would expect to gain. :O
I wish carbs and chocolate were easier to control, but since the stress isn't (boy, going on several years now for me), I'm not surprised they keep showing up. ;)

Such a fun piece. Carbs and chocolate have built a permanent addition in my brain. I think Stress IS my landlord, lol.
