this made me all teary! (which made it just the perfect thing to read before work.... :| ) i admit i'm not much of a cat person - i like other people's cats but i don't want one of my own - but tigger sounds like such a sweet, loving kitty. (and cute!) this is a really lovely tribute to her.
Sorry about the pre-work teariness! I got teary writing it, thinking about the good times we had with her and trying to balance not bogging down in random detail with remembering the little quirks that are so special to an individual pet.
She was so sweet. She would wait in the bathroom for me in the morning, and hang out while I got ready for work. I learned not to put my shoes on until the end, in case I needed to pet her with my feet while brushing my teeth or something. She also had a wonderfully solid purr. Thor had a tiny purr to go with his tiny voice, and the Whale only purrs in one direction (like a tiger). By contrast, that made Tigger sound like a motorboat!
The Whale is a very poor substitute for a cuddly, polite cat.
What a sweet story. I'm so glad your cats are/were part of your life. I like cats but 2 of my kids are allergic to them. My dogs are sweet. They are a lot of work but they are like family members. I will be forever grateful for the love my dogs give to my children.
Oh, it's terrible to be allergic to pets. My husband is a little bit allergic to cats, but he loves them, so we stick to short-haired cats. As long as he doesn't bury his face in their fur, he's okay.
I think having pets to love is as wonderful for children as having the love of a pet. It teaches them compassion and consideration, and the rewards of a pet's love are just unquantifiable.
Thanks for reading! I feel so much better for having gotten all of this out, because I know the remembrance will always be here for me to come back to. My son made a Powerpoint presentation the day after Tigger died, and that helped him capture so much of what was special about her.
Each pet has such an individual personality that you're really missing a friend when they're gone. Our remaining cat is so different that it just makes Tigger's absence more noticeable.
I'll bet that's one of the hardest things about traveling so much-- that you can't really have pets the way you'd like. I'd sure miss that, though the adventure might make up for it!
Our pets are so much like other family members/friends in that people who randomly come across them will never know them the way you do. To outsiders, she just seemed like a shy, quiet cat. To us, she was an incredibly sweet, loving little friend who adored her family.
The Whale is very friendly, and he'll go up to complete strangers for pets! But in many ways, he only loves us slightly more than people he does not actually know. It's all about him. :)
