Dean knew about the letter from Stanford, but it was an offer, not a decision. For a while, he could cling to a thin sliver of hope.
But then Sam said it, the words aimed like an attack at eighteen years of Winchester tradition: "I'm going away to college."
The air nearly crackled with static as their father's face darkened with anger. Then shouting exploded through the kitchen, the inevitable lead-up to bitter words too damaging to take back.
Dean stood frozen and silent, lost to the buzzing in his head that signaled the utter destruction of everything he loved.
