After midnight, the evening's hunts faded into memories and aching limbs. In the privacy of motel rooms, they traced each other's wounds and would-be injuries in a ritual of reassurance.
Secrets spilled from their fingertips, whole histories of Don't leave and I'm here and Just you and me, Sammy.
Some nights were slow and tender. Others were marked by the roughness and urgency of knowing they'd survived and that neither of them was fragile.
Darkness always came, kinder than daylight, and the truth was easier to find.
