That's a very sweet ending - a nice way to put the holiday into proper perspective, and wonderful to know that John has found his way to understanding that, even if Matt isn't quite there yet and is still more caught up in the trappings of the season.

They've kind of met in the middle, which is nice. John probably went through big gatherings with Holly, and had gotten used to something more low-key, but he's been reminded that he isn't single anymore and he has to accomodate both his and Matt's needs.

And Matt's has probably never been part of the adult intimacy of a 2-person holiday, which has its own charm. :)
