Excellant work in showing the rawness of Deans emotions and the unsureness that he feels. Felt like I was inside his mind, amazing job. This chapter made me want to hug Dean and never let him go.

Thank you!

This minor "Dean angst" has been sitting on my computer for over a month, waiting for additional chapters to follow it in this fic.

All his frustrations and loneliness and confusion about Sam leaving, and why, really get to me.

I wrote another fic, Lost that got posted before this chapter. It has more of Dean's POV on all this, which I hope is not redundant with this chapter. I think they're different enough.

A shrine, huh? ;)

This was an excellent installment. You portray Dean's emotions perfectly--despite the fact that it's AU, he's not at all out of character.

He breathed in those lost memories, wound through with the scent of Sam’s hair, and it came back to him, what it had been like before the loneliness started choking the life out of him and he stopped wondering when the hunt would end and started wondering when it would finish him instead.

That was just beautiful. Lyrical and so, so sad.

Thank you. The main part of this that's AU is the background of what happened with the shapeshifter (and of course, these Wincesty moments that for some reason we did not see on television). But perhaps I misunderstand how AU is usually used (others on my friendslist have discussed this issue), because I do aim to keep them in character.

It struck you just the right way, then. The times that were good, when they depended so much upon each other, are a place that Dean still wants to live. Sam leaving, in the middle of all of that, changed everything for Dean and everything between them. :-(

Generally I classify AUs as just anything that's not a little snippet of what might have happened in canon. I guess I called this AU because of the Wincest ;) Personally, I'm a big fan of AUs if they're done the right way. A lot of times in AUs from any fandom the characters are horribly OOC, as if the author can't figure out how to say what they want to without completely changing the characters--but your Dean was absolutely perfect.

Insecure!Dean, something new and interesting. I haven't come across it before and I'm intrigued, mainly because how you describe him makes it fit into his character so smoothly. It's like, I can see where that trait would affect his actions.

Favorite line of the whole fic: He tried to pull out from under Sam as smoothly as possible, but Sam roused enough to burrow into him and groan a little in protest.

Loved it! Made me all gooey inside. Sam is such a cutie, I just want to cuddle him all the time. (Which reminds me in the 11th episode where Dean says Sam has puppy dog eyes, hee!) Anyways, I really like where you're taking the story, and I am off to the next chapter, hee. *grins*

I'm not sure he was insecure before Sam left. Despite losing his mother, I have the feeling that once he'd adjusted to their life, their mission, and being his father's perfect soldier, the world was Dean's oyster. Until Sam left him behind and neglected him like he meant nothing, and Dean was left with the darkness of their lifestyle and his father's obsession with revenge. That must have been a huge jolt to the spirit for him. He didn't quite know what he had until it left and broke him in the process. :(

I loved that, because it's true and because it shows that Dean is aware of Sam's secret weapon. I'm sure it's been used on him many a time. ;) And Dean was just so pissy in that episode (for understandable reasons) that his mouth was even less filtered than usual. It was ( ... )
