As the ship drew near the shore, Charlotte’s heart began to fill with dread. It shouldn’t have been this way. She always knew that the trip would come to an end, but she hadn’t expected it to be so wonderful, so life-changing. She barely recognized herself in the mirror anymore. She wasn’t even the same woman who left Cascade to set foot on this ship only a few short weeks ago. Would these changes be enough, she wondered, for her to stand up to the formidable woman that raised her? Or would she revert back to the mousy spinster aunt who could be easily pushed around? She tried to remember the things that Doctor Jacquinth taught her or the things that Jerry had said to her. Jerry had loved the woman that she was now, perhaps it was the woman she had always been, hidden beneath the eyeglasses and heavy brows and bulky clothing. She’d shed the guise of her previous life. Now she was ready to continue with this one. She took a deep breath and readied herself to disembark.
