Jules, The Vampire Diaries (TV) meganbmoore February 1 2011, 16:08:22 UTC
Hated long before she ever showed up by virtue of being advertised as a character who would hate Damon(now they hate her for killing people, while cooing over how tragic and sympathetic it is when Damon kills people) I loved her from the moment she showed up and called Damon on his bull.

Actually, I said she was hated by the entire fandom before she showed up for hating Damon, not that it's the only reason people hate her now. I don't get the impression she hates all vampires (though she seems to be a bit older, and since vampires supposedly all but wiped out werewolves, and she seems to be somewhat aware of the history there, she could) just the ones in town because she rightly believes that they'er responsible for her friend's death.

I don't mind liking Jules as an antagonist because, unlike Damon (and like Katherine, Elijah and Isabel) we aren't meant to sympathize with her in spite of the bad things she does, including as she does them, or focus on her pain above her victims.

Bonnie Bennet, the Vampire Diaries penny_lane_42 February 1 2011, 16:20:49 UTC
Badass witch, awesome best friend, and someone who's thrown into a world she couldn't have anticipated. People hate her because she reacts as probably anyone would to the news that vampires are real--she doesn't trust them. Fandom hates that she threatens their poor woobie Damon, but she's perfectly right not to trust an unrepentant murderer. And while she struggles with coming to terms with her best friend being turned into a vampire, that, too, is completely realistic and understandable, and she's coming around to Caroline's side again. She'll do what she can to protect those she loves, even if she has to protect them from themselves.

The most sensible person on the show? Definitely.

The show should basically just about the ladies, in my opinion, but nobody's asking me. Less vampire angst, more awesome friendships.

ANYWAYS!

And on a more shallow note, I'm also looking forward to everything Bonnie/Jeremy.

Me, too! Came out of nowhere, but I'm feeling it!

I totally agree with you!! The TVD ladies are actually awesome - Caroline and Bonnie in particular, I think. Less vampires!!

Dawn Summers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer penny_lane_42 February 1 2011, 16:24:06 UTC
Unrepentant Dawn stan here. Is she annoying at times? Uh, yes. But she's a teenage little sister. I have a little sister, and let me tell you, she was often annoying during her teen years. That's kind of what teenage little sisters do.

But even though Dawn's been abandoned by every stabalizing figure in her life (first her dad, then her mom's death, then Buffy's death--for her--then Giles leaves, then Spike breaks her trust) she manages to grow up into a kick-ass young woman who'll threaten the vampire who hurt her sister, turn over the mantle of potential slayer with grace, teach herself ancient languages, and refuse to be protected. Dawn Summers is a badass, okay?

I LOVE DAWN. When I finished the show and read some opinions on it, I was shocked to find out how hated she is. Sure, she annoyed me at times, but frankly, less than some other main characters. I think she really grew throughout the show and, indeed, ended up totally badass.

Copy that. I'd add Tara's death to the list of horrendous blows, along with Willow's death threats and Xander's betrayal of her romantic ideals when he left Anya at the altar. So, so much for a young girl to rise above, but she does.

Definitely seconding this part, because I think those were all really important. Season six (especially the latter part of season six) was a series of really awful things for everyone, but for Dawn (who was already dealing with a lot) it basically meant losing her entire support group and having all of her lofty opinions of those around her shattered. It's like they went, "sorry to burst your bubble, Dawny, but everyone you know really does leave, die, or just suck in general. And, as a bonus, have an extra helping of disillusionment on top of all that."

And she takes all of that and she--it's amazing, I know--actually grows into this fantastic young woman in season seven. And I'm sure she has her annoying moments in season seven (though I can't actually remember any of them off the top of my head), but she does so many awesome things (things already mentioned by everyone here) and I just can't see not loving her.

And yet I still see some people writing her off as a whiny kleptomaniac and it's just like, um, hi... what?

Martha Jones, Doctor Who penny_lane_42 February 1 2011, 16:26:50 UTC
Was she served well by the writing of her character? No, she really wasn't. She could have been a whole lot more than the show let her be.

But.

She walked the post-apocolyptic earth, armed just with a story, and she saved the freakin' world. She's the one who had the self-possession and self-awareness to realize that she had to leave the Doctor, and she did it with grace. And then she kept using all she learned to fight the good fight.

Martha Jones is a legend.

Yes, she is!

She saved the world while her family was under threat from serious evil.

Martha is Big Picture.

I loved the way that Martha left. I did not care for how the writers portrayed her character for the entirety of her season, but when she left, I was like "GOOD FOR YOU, MARTHA." She was a mfing grown up about it.

I also have one DW comic book, and she is very badass in that.

Loved, loved, loved Martha despite the writing for her character.

I think most of fandom hates her, but I really think as a character she makes total sense. Her motivations are pretty reasonable when you look at it, Alex has done her some pretty heavy wrongs, and also almost got Jaden cancelled. <3333 Jadeeeen, I hope you get a good storyline soon, and I hope you realize how awful Division is and break out and work with Nikita.

All my friends love her and want more of her! But I have not touched the fandom, and fully believe you that fandom hates her.

The focus on Jaden during Nikita's message makes me SO HOPEFUL.

Some of my friends like her, but I'm pretty careful about my flist being people who aren't going to dismiss a female character as a "bitch", but rather look at her.

There is not a great deal of fandom! But I have already seen people say some rather nasty things about her. :(

OMG I KNOW that makes me so hopeful too! I want her to be amazing on the right side now! I BELIEVE IN YOU JADEN.

YES, it would be so exciting to have Jaden on board! It's my favorite thing about Nikita: women helping women or working cooperatively.
