#mayans: Spanish TV host walks out over unfair treatment of Cristiano

Dec 07, 2012 12:07

Let that subject line sink in for a moment, will you?

While we are on the topic of Cristiano (given that it is his advent calendar day and all) I thought I'd share this moment that made a single tear spring into my eye.

Jenny above said everything that I wanted to say in a much nicer, clearer way than I could possibly manage.

I don't actively hate Messi (SORRY to bring his name up -but i had to say this!) because I love Cris, but I hate him because his pr machine functions so well at the expense of Cris. And I loath the short fucker for his fake as hell humility as well.

I have a feeling that some day the PR machine's success will backfire in a reputation-destroying manner, and that it already restricts his life more than he would like. IDK if this is a cultural universal, but in the US we "build them up to tear them down." Thus, the benefit of NOT appearing to be a perfect angel is that there are fewer/lower expectations of behavior -- something which Cris has already experienced (eg, the one-night-stand baby that caused press for a week would have been unthinkable for the messiah, LOL).

I find the Messi PR machine so fascinating, (same for Barca), and yes, I also think it's incredibly restrictive. In the the long run and on a personal level, Cris is better off. An image of wholesomeness and humility can only be sustained for so long, look at Tiger Woods. I wouldn't be surprised if Messi was just as troubled.

Lolol good call. Yeah, you nailed it. As someone who once worked in pr, I find it amazing how good barfa's pr machine is. In this day and age, with this amount of media saturation and the rabid obsession the Spanish press has for barfa - they still flipping pull this off. It's unbelievable!!!

On one hand I can understand the obsessions of anything ONLY Spanish. It's a completely bigoted view, but ok. But then for fucks sake the stunted one isn't even Spanish, so wtf?! Yeah he came over at what, 13? Fine. But that does not make him Spanish!

So yeah, I bow low to the barfa pr machine. I loath to admit it, but they totally rock.

The attitude towards Cris is xenophobic, but someone also needs to be point out that it's just fucking discriminatory. I can't begin to explain the number of men (and women) who have attempted to justify their hatred for Cris by some combination of "cares about his hair too much", "cares about clothes too much", "buys too many expensive cars", "fake tans" (I kid you not), etc. It's just so blatantly homophobic. That a man who- while clearly heterosexual- enjoys things traditionally delegated to some cliched 'gay culture' is not only masculine and strong and brave but also a better player than all your faves? Well this simply cannot be borne.

Honestly, how many times have I heard "Ronaldo is so gay" or "the girlfriend is a beard" when he scores against their team or does something which boggles their tiny, little minds?

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS

It's so fucking true. This is all homophobia, misogyny (since gay men are obviously not "real men" and more "feminine" or whatever heteronormative crap they come up with) and that is at the bottom of this.

He is too fucking confident, HAPPY, self-possessed etc... for people to deal with.

I love this thread, the comments and all the people in it! Actually, I was a Cristiano Ronaldo fan before becoming a Real Madrid fan. He basically brought me to Real Madrid. That's why it pains me to see all the hate/lack of love from Real Madrid fans. I've only just recently got into following actual football teams so I was a bit shocked that this happens. You can actually have genuine HATE for a player from your team, even someone who is vital to the teams success. I actually read somewhere that Cris was happy because the Bernabeu chanted his name for the first time. Is this true? WTF! 4 years of non-appreciation?

Here is something I read to myself everytime I see people hate on Cris.
