WTF indeed. There has been a rash of reports of juvenile crime in the last six months or so, it seems. I honestly don't know whether it's the new trend of sensationalism (reporting horrific but possibly isolated instances), or whether younger generations really do have a dulled capacity for humanity and basic compassion. I mean really basic compassion like recognizing one never has the right to debase and violate another human being.
Considering how violent juvenile gangs seem to be over here (don't really know about how they tend to be in the States), I'm personally more inclined to say that it's the latter (although there is no denying the sensationalism from reporting it alone, simply because it was murder and the perpetrators were teens).
Teenagers killing innocent by-standers for no actual reason whatsoever have been reported again and again by the media, and here, where the reason is given that it was because the victims were part of a different subculture to theirs, is disturbing.
I also think that part of it is the dislike for goths which seems to exist in general society...back in high school, the other kids really didn't like goths, but at least they were never inclined to go as far as to kill someone who identified with this subculture. Bully them maliciously, and make fun of them behind their backs? Yes. Violently attack and even kill them? No.
younger gangs over here (in my experience) usually have to do with race and are terribly violent
though i don't see them killing someone due to dress if it wasn't gang-affiliated (or killing kids or beating up old people for shits and giggles, as i've read about gangs/stupid bastards from the UK doing)
pregnant middle-schoolers, racial gang wars, and kids bringing guns/knives to school and trying to kill each other are pretty common occurances in metro atlanta :< (sounds racist, but where i used to live the black and hispanic gangs were always at each other)
but, it's odd... again, i keep reading about how in britland people, i mean children and the elderly elderly, are getting attacked by dumb teenage white kids
Wow, I think this is the first case I've heard where someone was killed because of their fashion sense.
Like Strangey-kun mentioned, random acts of unprovoked violence that happen around here are usually due to race, or what language you're heard speaking.
In a sense, it's not really the first time I've heard about someone getting abused or even killed for what they wore...like the Sikh man who got attacked after 9/11, and before that took place, accounts of Muslim women being attacked for wearing a headscarf.
But yeah, this seems to be the first instance I've heard someone was attacked for not supposedly belonging to another ethnicity, religion or for holding an alternative sexual orientation.
That's disgusting. You just don't go around and kill someone because they're different! And the world claims prejudice, discrimination and racism ISN'T dead... Yeah... sure...
It just goes to show how messed up this world has become. We have similar problems over here in the States but it ranges from the way you talk right down to the color of your skin. I don't care what scientists and psychologists say: Humanity isn't above the law or isn't above being brought down a peg or too. That's why America's in such a bad shape right now (what with the economy fluctuating up and down, increased homelessness and joblessness, gas prices soaring, food products constantly going up and up, etc, etc). Sorry but stuff like this just doesn't sit right with me.
Humanity above the law? I haven't really heard that being said, before...they meant in the context of not stooping so low as to commit murder like in this case, did they?

A couple of years before that, someone got stabbed outside St Paul's Cathedral by a gang.
And recently, a man got kicked to death for no reason by a couple of young gang members.
Ugh...just typing this down, it seems as if there could be a pattern of sorts. >_
