I've started getting spam replies here on LJ, and I'm considering turning up the privacy level on this mother.

Is there anything I should know before doing so?

Oh yea, one more thing- I see a lot of 'friends only' journals with one open to anyone "post if you want access" post, so as to allow newcomers to be able to make themselves known easily.

I've noticed an increase in this recently too. Not yet at such a rate that I'd go friends-only, fingers crossed.

I mainly get replies from friends anyway. :-)

Me too, but there are a few friends who read from google-reader, and I do occasionally link to posts from Twitter and FB.
