Halloween Stories #2

Oct 30, 2011 14:30

An old story of mine. It seems appropriate to the season.

Second Story Man

Sunset comes and I awaken in the telephone exchange which was. This is where I spend most of my time now, in the second story of a storefront in the middle of downtown.

So why is he there? )

What a creepy ending, sends chills up my spine.

Is the based off some real location, because I would love to see the old phone building.

Sort of. In small towns around here most of the upper stories of store buildings downtown are almost all empty, and many of the stores themselves are. Several years ago I was walking through at twilight, and suddenly looked up at one second story that had especially large, especially nice windows. For a moment I KNEW something was looking back... but of course it was just my imagination, right?

I don't have a picture of that downtown. I don't know if it was an old phone exchange. This is just a story about something left behind, watching us.

Actually, I think I did find a picture of it- sort of. Mind you, this is a recent one and the buildings look a lot less run down than they did at the time I remember.

The building that is the subject of the picture is not "mine." "Mine" is second from the left- the pale yellow building next to the older, fancier one, with a broad arch over unusually wide windows. It looked like it had been meant to be something special. But the idea it might have been a once upon a telephone exchange is fiction- as is that the more ornate building next door had been the opera house.

I think.

That's where I felt something watching me, though, I'm pretty sure of it.

Thanks! Wrote it because I got spooked on a deserted street. Maybe the secret for writing ghost and horror stories is to spook easily.
