On the positive side, you don't have seals go bad quite so readily as you do with a piston pump.

Yes, I grew up on a shallow well. With lots of iron. At least it was a little higher then the septic tank.

Yes to all of the above, and especially your comment on the true nature of centrifugal pumps. Really now - two horsepower just to get yourself a cup of water? (Sorry for the rant, but no one else seems to understand when I get excited about the subject.)

You'd love the crawlspace in the (old) first house I ever bought. At one choke point I could only squeeze under with my head turned to one side, and my chest half-compressed. About 7 inches clearance, I think. Maybe 8.
