Re X-Box type machines -- when I discovered the WDTV Live device, I bought two, one for home and one for Baltimore, so I could finally play all my .avi and other files on TV and stream Netflix. I have a 1.5 TB drive hooked up to it now. I bought two Roku boxes for my parents, for their Netflix and Amazon, but unfortunately Roku won't do YouTube; my mother uses YT all the time for instructional videos.

Have you seen the new version of Upstairs Downstairs? It took a while, but I was hooked by the end of Season 2.

I did momentarily try to figure out how to hook up one of my external hard drives to the x-box but then chose the easier thumb drive way. :) I may still try to figure that out some time. Like the rest of it it's probably a lot easier than my brain is telling me. haha.

I have not started the new Upstairs Dowstairs but I probably will eventually. I have the old one on netflix but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Since you watch Dr. Who, can you tell me if I want to start watching it, must I watch it from the beginning? And which beginning? I want to watch "current" but can one just jump in in the middle? A friend is sending me dvds of second season (current series, I guess.) Can I start there?

Any recommendations for getting started for someone who has never seen even one scrap of any episode from any version?

I guess it's up to you. Personally, and this is mostly me, I would not start a series in the middle, but that's my thing. I like continuity. As for DW, I don't know if you're meaning season 2 which was the start of the 10th Doctor, or season 2 the second season with the 11th Doctor.

If the former, that would probably be all right but you'll miss out on Christopher Eccleston's 9th Doctor and he's lovely. If it's the later, I feel that you will be confused. It's better to start at the beginning of the 11th Doctor (technically season 5 of the new series).

With Doctor Who, every doctor is different, and with the 11th doctor we have a new show runner so it's very different from the 10th and 9th doctors. If your friend is giving you the first season with 10 you should be okay.
