No, you're not alone-if I were going to pick the movie apart that would have been on my WTF! list along with (and despite loving McCoy's maneuvering to get Kirk on the ship) the way they explicated the Kobaiashi Maru test -- this Kirk was just not mature enough -- this wasn't a leader with experience, this was a pain tn the ass. Snotty brats, even if they are recent academy graduates who have just saved the universe, don't get command of prestigious metal like the Enterprise -- and, yes I realize it was movie shorthand to get everyone in the correct positions so let's consider the possibilities in Spock/McCoy.
I meant to comment on the Kobaiashi Maru test. I think the film brushed past the real reasons why Kirk did what he did, and I was not at all fond of the decision to make Spock be the person who programmed the test. It must have seemed like a really cool way for the two to meet, but I didn't quite warm up to it.
However, I take offense to Kirk being a snotty brat! lol. Perhaps he is, but I had no real problems with him in the movie. Most of my issues came from the Spock side of things, but in the end it's all relatively minor.
