I love this. I love how Gunny knows his job - the real one and the one that's outlined in the Marine Corps handbook - and he loves his job. He enjoys his job. Gunny reminds me of my dad, who swore he'd be in the military until it stopped being fun. That's Mike right there. And right here in this story.
This hurts me a little, for his actual wife and kids. I don't know how women (and men) do it. You have to really love someone to deal with all that. F'reals.
I am still all about the brilliance of Gunny's musing on Ray + mail because OF COURSE Ray would be the one to notice if someone was getting bad mail or no mail and OF COURSE Gunny would be the one to realize that. And I just loved all his thoughts on everything because he's Gunny and he's awesome. And the letters from his wife just kind of broke my heart.
