I like the picture you build up here of an ordinary but content life.
Even though I am one of those who generally bends more towards, "Sam made a mistake", if only because I was annoyed the resolution of the series was landed on the audience in a higgledy-piggeldy lump. I've written entire ten page essays about that, though :D
There are lots of lovely little details in this that I really enjoyed.
This was so great, a fantastic look at how Sam has got to be after the series if he wants to make it all worthwhile. I'm used to reading LOM fics that focus on during the show when Sam is all doom and gloom 'must get back' and it's *lovely* to see him kind of shake himself up.
At the same time though he's kind of lost that spark or whatever it was that made him fight Gene's brutality every step of the way. He's accepting things in the world he doesn't like the way the rest of us do. Which is interesting too:)
I think, for me, the ending of the series was Sam's happy ending. I agree that the series was overwhelming doom and gloom, because Sam was caught and couldn't seem to regain control, but to me in the end he made his choice and he seemed happier for it, so I say more power to him :-)
Eeeeeeee, I love this and I think right now I love you. :)
This is just full of wonderful details and I adore the idea of Sam going with the flow a bit (but yes, still being there as a counterweight to Gene) and even being happy, being joyful for a change.
There's a difference between being alive and living that Sam's finally getting a handle on.
I was telling dodificus that I know a lot of people weren't thrilled with the ending, but I am, because this is the choice that Sam made and he got to make it as opposed to just being stuck. Mostly I'm just sort of flailing around all the damn time because it turns out John Simm was in all this stuff I love and I've only just put it together. I can't believe I forgot about State of Play, oh my SHIT, is that awesomecakes.
Hooray! Wonderful look at what Sam might be like once all his motivation in the series has no reason to be there any more. (Personally it's my idea of Hell, but Sam's a different kettle of fish.) He's just so aware, it's fantastic.
Gene ever mentioning Sam's bum - or lack of - is a bit odd, but I love the knockabout dynamic they've got going here. Great fun.
Also, Gene's driving gloves are a good thing to focus on. Mmmmm.
I understand that the bum remark could go either way, but to me it was just another example of that dick swinging contest that Gene and Sam engage in every day. "Mine's bigger!" "No, mine is!" "No, mine is!"

Like Loz I like the way you build up the picture of Sam's life and I love the little touches - like the things Sam notices.
Welcome to the fandom!
