AHHH. THANK YOU!

She's not a "female character," she's a character who happens to be female, if that makes sense. She was always allowed to have her own role, apart from Sherlock. And allowed to be competent and have her own skills, and appreciate his, but not be completely dwarfed by them. She has outside friends that are normal. She has a life. She has needs. She tries dating. She is a person. She isn't his sidekick.

YESSSS.

I hadn't been able to put my feelings into words, but I think my fear of Watson-being-female was similar to yours. That it was just some cheap little hook (and, yes, the romantic thing, too) and it wouldn't really MEAN anything, if that makes sense.

BUT IT MEANS SO MUCH. She is very much her own character.

And she stayed. And objectively, the thing that is different about him is her. He's better with her. And he says that to her. And it was amazing! It was so amazing. So I was spoiled for that scene. I'd seen the quotes multiple times. I knew it was coming. BUT IT STILL BLEW ME AWAY. THE WAY HE LOOKS AT HER ( ... )

That scene is one of the non-finale highlights of the season. I just love everything about the way he asks her to be his partner.

And I know what you mean about shipping it less and less. I never really shipped it, but the more I watch, the more I'm convinced that they shouldn't go there (though I reserve the right to change my mind).
