post 373: Character Discussion, Lori Weston

Jan 30, 2012 08:51

I’d like to explore the character of Lori. I don't want to bash the character or sing her praises, but just share some thoughts. I know there are fans who have strong opinions, so let me be clear that I don't want to offend anyone and I don't want to start an argument. Possibly a cargument, though? :D I want to objectively look at this. I’ve ( Read more... )

Actually for a while now I've thought that maybe Lori has more involvement in the bigger picture than we know right now. I've become convinced that her character ambiguity is there for a reason and the fact that we don't really know that much about her is for a reason that will be addressed at some point in future episodes. I kinda hope I'm right.

I like the idea that maybe Lori has been reporting to the Governor of screen and maybe in a future episode we'll find out quite what she's been telling him and maybe it'll be used against the team.

My brother also thinks that they wouldn't go to the trouble of writing in a new character for no reason. There's got to be more to her than we're seeing.

Oh, and for the record, I like Lori. I find her ambiguity really interesting.

And I'm still holding on to my Lori is involved in the Shelburne storyline theory!

I'm even more unsure now as to her purpose on the show! It's going to make the season that much more interesting for me. It could be that she has a personal secret that has little to do with the team, too.

I was thining about Shellburne today, too, and it occurre to me that Wo Fat is afraid of Shelburne. Shelburne killed his father, but that isn't enough to explain why he's afraid. Angry, vengeful, yes. But afraid? I still agree with you that Lori is mixed in there somewhere.

I'm trying not to think about it too much as I like her character anyway but I would love for there to be more to her or her to be involved in something bigger.

But is Wo Fat afraid physically - like afraid for his life - or is he afraid about what Shelburne might know? There might be some information about Wo Fat (or his father) out there that he doesn't want people to now. Or something.

We still have almost half the season left, so this gives me something to look forward to! There could be so much going on here. I don't even know if Wo Fat will be back at all, but I'm sure there will be more to Steve's story. And Lori's!

maybe her reporting to the Governor is going to come into play in the future episode where it's said that someone's job is threatened?

you aren't the only one who's wondered about her (lack of) reporting to the Governor.

I missed that! Someone's job is threatened in an upcoming episode? She could easily be part of that.

it's the tease/summary (on wikipedia) for episode 16. I should have mentioned that was a spoiler in case someone didn't want to know that.

No, I don't minb hearing that! I'm just kind of hit or miss at finding out things. I don't always read the news items. :D

I've been hoping that there is more to Lori, that she's actually got something going on with the Governor and possibly the whole Wo Fat thing on some level because if she hasn't, I find her character very lazy on the writers/producers part.

I think I would actually enjoy her more if she was a little more antagonistic. She was put in as a babysitter as she put it but she doesn't seem to have done much sitting, as it were. She just joined in the investigations like a regular officer/team member when I felt that she was meant to be some sort of inspector type character. We haven't seen her report back to the governor once [who I quite like, he's pretty badass]and we even saw her disagree with and challenge him on the case with the bus full of school kids.

It seems strange that the producers/writers would introduce this new concept and character as a watchdog, then never again address it. I know that in television, sometimes details get off-track and lost, but that is a big detailI agree with this. I sometimes think that those working ( ... )

Hey, I wrote my own dissertation, so you can too!

I actually watch most TV shows the way you mentioned: not paying that much attention to the details. But they are minor details, not major plot plans. The writers/producers had to have had a plan for Lori when she was introduced.

Sounds like you're confirming that she hasn't done much profiling. You're right, any good detective would have some basic skills. Adding someone who had advanced skills would make the show that much more interesting.

Thanks for all the great comments!

LOL, except I've been wondering that seriously!!! Or at least somehow involved with the mystery!!

I wonder if she dressed up as Shelburne for Halloween?

Lori. I still don't like her that much but it's become much better during the last episodes. If they'd have sticked with the babysitting thing it'd be better IMO. But she just 'normally' joined the team and for the first episodes took over Kono's place. Though I also think/hope she reported to the Governor off screen ( ... )

LJ seems to have lost my first comments, so if you get this twice, I apologize!

I heard a lot of people complain about the rocket launcher. I kind of attributed it to all of the crazy stuff that goes on with this show! Sometimes it's the hard-to-believe that makes it entertaining!

So her profiling is minimal? I'm glad that a couple of people have confirmed that for me. I wish they would add more profiling. It would be interesting!

Thanks for all of your comments! This whole thing is so interesting!

Yes, introducing her as a love interest immediately set me on edge. They didn't follow through with that and I'm so glad!

I have seen one episode of Crminimal Minds! THe one Alex was in, which was incredible. That, and a few other shows I've seen, is mostly where I got the idea that Lori doesn't do much profiling. I'm glad I've got the right impression about that. Those shows also gave me the idea that H50 could be more interesting if they had someone who did a lot of profiling.

I would have liked more Kono and less Lori in the North Korea episode. It would have made more sense, since she's been part of the Ohana from the beginning. She and Steve have been through a lot together, and it makes more sense that she'd be in the middle of the rescue.

Would you mind if I added you to my friends list? We seem to be in a lot of the same places on LJ and share our love of H50. :D
