Gopnik does it again

There he goes again: in the latest New Yorker (cover date Oct 29 & Nov 5), Adam Gopnik has a "Critic at Large" essay on the subject of geography and geopolitical history, the kind of thing I would normally love to read. But right there on the first page, at the top of column two, he tosses off a reference to a common cultural touchstone and gets it
