I just thought I'd let you guys know that my brother, Alan, was killed in Iraq yesterday. Apparently his unit was checking a building for weapons and when he kicked in a door it set off a bomb - he was the only one killed. I'm not sure about funeral arrangements or anything yet - but I'll let folks know as I do. I know that most of you didn't know

A close family friend lost his son in Iraq a while back. I didn't know what to say then either, other than I'm really genuinely sorry to read of your loss.

I don't think the 'right' words exist. All I can express is my thoughts and good wishes to you, your family and the friends and loved ones of your brother at what must be a terrible time for you all.
