Whenever I used the "Levels" step, my picture turned completely red, and I'm using Gimp as well, so I don't know what I must have done wrong.

Hmm, that's strange. Maybe it's the image you used? I don't really know. =/
But, I went into GIMP, and got a similar result to that step using Curves by putting a point at x:85 y:99 in the Red Channel. Hopefully this works better for you!
