Photoshop icon tutorial

Jun 03, 2007 12:30

I recently pirated downloaded a copy of Photoshop CS2 and kind of screwed around with it until I got a desirable result. PSP is still WAY easier to use so I won't use PS from now on unless I have to. Tutorial HOOOOO.

How to go from
to
in just 8 easy steps.

I'm sure we all know by now how to crop a base. And even if we don't, there are tons of other tutorials out there that show you how. My base is a screencap of Aaron Thomas as he appeared in Hannibal Rising. (This kid is adorable. Seriously. He's single-handedly responsible for turning me into a pedophile. <3).

1. Sharpen your base (Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen). Simple enough.

2. Here's where it starts to get complicated. Make a new color balance layer (Layer > New adjustment layer > Color balance). Set it to:
MIDTONES: leave these alone (all at 0).
SHADOWS: Cyan -21; Magenta 0; Yellow +8.
HIGHLIGHTS: Cyan +49; Magenta 0; Yellow +40.
It should now look something like this (feel free to adjust the color balance to your liking):

3. Layer > Layer style > Blending options. Pin light at 100% opacity.

4. Duplicate your base. Set the blend mode to Screen at 100% opacity. (This is COMPLETELY optional; I only did it because I noticed at this point that my base was dark.)

5. Layer > New adjustment layer > Gradient. Set the gradient to Color: #b4e8e3; Angle: 39.81.

6. Blend mode: Vivid light, 30%.

7. Layer > New fill layer > Solid; color #99634d.

this is what your fill looks like. The lazy can paste it as a new layer

8. Set the blend mode to darken; 30%.

...Aaand you're done! (Oh, and you can use the Hannibal icon in this tutorial...just follow the usual rules. Credit to GY, etc.)
