yeah, I can see how the paradigm shift happens. I'd probably have done the same as you and suffered horribly sweating myself to death with my gortex coat. Mind you wearing that coat when it's been -40 this winter I've been warm (well at least where the jacket covers).

The shells are gortex too... its just that that's all they are. (I know what you meant though.)

I learned the shell coat/winter coat thing when I started doing Ice Climbing out here. I'd still bring the winter coat with me though, weight restrictions or no. I'll want it when I'm sitting around waiting for dinner to cook, or while talking afterwards.

Yeah, and that's a common thing. Although most ppl bring a down coat for that: lighter with better insulation.
