Song lyrics

I collect depressing songs. It's a hobby. And I'm looking for more. But I'm also curious - do you know any songs where the lyrics *really* get to you? A specific point in the song where your heart just breaks for the speaker? If so, I want to know what song, and what lyrics ( Read more... )

"One More Minute" by Weird Al Yankovic.

I still perform it once or twice a year. Always brings the tears it does.

Most recently, I was dumbstruck by the song used at the ending of the Narnia 2 movie, Prince Caspian. The song being sung in the final scene and into the beginning of the credits.

It is. Every time that scene comes up, I get a catch in my throat. It works on so many levels when I stopped to think about it - not just it's applicability to the movie itself.

Of course, having submitted the above, I must point out that my all-time favorite song, the one that really moves me every time I hear it, is "Karn Evil 9" from the Works Vol. 1 album by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.

I thought I was the only one who collected depressing songs! Long ago, before the internet where you could look up song lyrics, I had this notebook and I would transcribe the lyrics to every song on my "depressing tape". And years later, I notice how wrong those lyrics actually were, oh well. They meant something to me. :)

Right now, the song that gets to me is Missy Higgins' "Where I stood"

Cuz I don't know who I am, who I am without you
All I know is that I should
And I don't know if I could stand another hand upon you
All I know is that I should
Cuz she will love you more than I could
She who dares to stand where I stood

Yup - I've been making "Sad Songs" mixed tapes and CDs since I was in high school. I'm up to "Sad Songs 10" right now :)
