Book #9 -- M. E. Breen, Darkwood, 273 pages.

Ok, so I stayed up way too late last night reading this whole thing in one sitting. I really only meant to read a chapter or two before bed, but it sucked me in. It's a very interesting twist on the bogeyman theme. In Howland, where Annie lives, no one goes outside at night. First of all, it's dark. Not your ordinary dark - no, nighttime in Howland is pitch black, the kind of dark where you can't seen your hand an inch from your nose. But more than the dark, the nighttime belongs to the kinderstalk: ravenous beasts who tear apart anyone left outside after nightfall and in particular, love to steal children. If you don't behave, the kinderstalk will come for you. But when Annie is forced to run away from her abusive uncle, she discovers that there is more going on in the dark than she ever imagined, and that the stories of the kinderstalk mask something even more sinister.

This is an a thoroughly enjoyable and impressive first novel, and as it ends with a few threads hanging, I'm *really* hoping there will be a sequel. Of course, since this one doesn't even come out until May 2009, even if there is a sequel it'll be a long wait :-(
