Book #7 -- Greg Kincaid, A Dog Named Christmas, 148 pages.
A sweet little heart-warming story about a family and a dog. There were parts that reminded me of Where the Red Fern Grows only with a happy ending.
Book #8 -- Dana Reinhardt, How to Build a House, 227 pages.
Harper's dad married Tess's mom Jane when they were both five. Since then, they've shared everything -- their parents, their siblings, their clothes, their room. But when Harper is sixteen, her parents divorce, and suddenly she's alone with her dad - no Jane, no Tess, no older sister or younger brother. Unable to cope with having the only family she's ever known taken away, Harper volunteers for a summer program for teens, building a house for a family whose home was destroyed by a tornado. Harper intends to loose herself in work for the summer, somewhere far away from LA and the broken remnants of her family. But something about this small Tennessee town won't let Harper shut the world out like she wants.
This is a really good book. It touched a chord in me personally, since the family I grew up with consisted of my mom, stepfather, and half-brother. It always bothered me that the man I called 'dad' had no legal claim to me, so I fully understand Harper's frustration.
