-HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!
Suzuka woke up in a daze. Her eyes automatically set on their wall clock and she was startled to realize it was already late at night. She had arrived at home a little earlier than expected, so while waiting for her husband, she started reading a book. She must have been more tired than she expected because she had fallen asleep. Recently, she had been very quick to get tired.
Suzuka slowly stood up and went out their bedroom. Is Yuto still at work?
She went to their living room and at once she knew that her husband must be home. His bag were discarded on their sofa, and his phone were sitting on the table. But where could he be?
"Yuto?" Suzuka called out.
When no response came, Suzuka proceeded to her husband's work room. It was actually more of a storage room, since that was where Yuto store all his music instruments, souvenirs from concerts (their own and from other artists), and awards from more than a decade of his work.
Suzuka silently opened the door and wasn't very surprise to see her husband hunched over his table, fast asleep. Yuto had been very busy with his newest drama, and he had been late getting home for the past month.
Suzuka neared Yuto, intending to wake him up. Before she does though, she noticed he had been writing. Suzuka automatically thought it was a new song, but when she looked at it closer, she realized it was a letter.
Curious, Suzuka started reading.
'Dear my little Angel,' Suzuka furrowed her brows, no more curious than ever. To whom exactly is this letter dedicated?
She continued reading.
'Recently, your mother and I were' Suzuka raised a brow, and then looked at her husband. They had just been married for half a year. And they hadn't really talked about having kids yet. But nevertheless, she continued.
'Recently, your mother and I were searching for some info about Daddy's latest role on Google.' Suzuka remembered that they did do this.
'Halfway through entering the question, Google returned a list of the most popular searches in the world. Perched at the top of the list was "How to keep him interested."
'It startled me. I scanned several of the countless articles about how to be sexy and sexual, when to bring him a beer versus a sandwich, and the ways to make him feel smart and superior.
'And I got angry.' Suzuka smiled. Somehow, she knew where this was going.
'Darling, it is not, has never been, and never will be your job to "keep him interested."
'Angel, your only task is to know deeply in your soul -- in that unshakeable place that isn't rattled by rejection and loss and ego -- that you are worthy of interest. (If you can remember that everyone else is worthy of interest also, the battle of your life will be mostly won. But that is a letter for another day.)
'If you can trust your worth in this way, you will be attractive in the most important sense of the word: you will attract a boy who is both capable of interest and who wants to spend his one life investing all of his interest in you.
'Little One, I want to tell you about the boy who doesn't need to be kept interested, because he knows you are interesting:
'I don't care if he puts his elbows on the dinner table -- as long as he puts his eyes on the way your nose scrunches when you smile (just like how your mother does). And then can't stop looking.
'I don't care if he can't play music with me -- as long as he can play with the children you give him and revel in all the glorious and frustrating ways they are just like you.
'I don't care if he doesn't follow his wallet -- as long as he follows his heart and it always leads him back to you.
'I don't care if he is strong -- as long as he gives you the space to exercise the strength that is in your heart.
'I couldn't care less how he votes -- as long as he wakes up every morning and daily elects you to a place of honor in your home and a place of reverence in his heart.
'I don't care about the color of his skin -- as long as he paints the canvas of your lives with brushstrokes of patience, and sacrifice, and vulnerability, and tenderness.
'I don't care if he was raised in this religion or that religion or no religion -- as long as he was raised to value the sacred and to know every moment of life, and every moment of life with you, is deeply sacred.' Suzuka felt very moved as she read. Even though they didn't have a child, lest a daughter, it was really very thoughtful of Yuto. And it also shows that this is also how her Yuto looks at her.
'In the end, Angel, if you stumble across a man like that and he and I have nothing else in common, we will have the most important thing in common:
You.'
Suzuka looked at her snoring husband and felt like crying somehow. Reigning the urge, she read the last words of the letter out loud.
"'Because in the end, the only thing you should have to do to "keep him interested" is to be you.
Your eternally interested guy,
Daddy"
As she said the last words, Yuto started stirring. He stretched out and finally woke up. He looked surprised to see his wife in front of him.
"Suzu…"
Suzuka smiled. "Okaeri." She said.
Yuto returned the smile. "Tadaima."
Yuto still seems to be half asleep, but Suzuka wanted to talk about the letter. She waved at him, and she watched as realization set on Yuto's face.
"Oh…" He said. "You've… read it?"
"Yeah." Suzuka said, with a little laugh. "I wondered at first who Angel was supposed to be."
Yuto scratched his head, feeling a little embarrassed.
"It's because of the drama…" Yuto said, a little defensively. His latest role was as a young father of a teenage girl.
"I know… and it is Father's Day tomorrow." Suzuka said.
"That too…" Yuto said.
They were quiet for a few seconds, and then Suzuka said.
"I didn't know you wanted a daughter."
"Well, when I was younger, I always imagined that when I had my own family, it'd be the same as my family. You know, with two boys… But then I really wanted a girl. First a girl, and then two boys…" He said, a little disconcertedly.
"You wanted an older sister?" Suzuka asked, immediately interpreting Yuto's words.
"Hmm, I guess so…" Yuto admitted.
"Is that why you always had crushes on older girls?" Suzuka suddenly asked.
Yuto sputtered. "That's not true! Who told you that?"
"Raiya." Suzuka said with a shrug. "And I think it is true."
Yuto pouted and then sighed in defeat. "Fine. It is true." He confessed."Well, you're five days older than me."
Suzuka smirked. "I know."
Yuto stood up. "Just forget about it. Have you eaten yet? I'm hungry." He said, putting both his hands on Suzuka's shoulder and stirring her towards the door.
"Do you have any plans for tomorrow?" Suzuka randomly asked, ignoring Yuto's comment.
"Well, it's both our day off and it's Father's Day." Yuto said. "Do you want to visit your parents? Mine will be going on a cruise tomorrow to celebrate."
"I was thinking of something else." Suzuka said as both of them walked towards their kitchen.
"What do you have in mind?"
"I was thinking of eating out or going to movies as a our celebration." Suzuka said.
"Celebration? For what?" Yuto asked, straining his mind, thinking if he had forgotten about an anniversary or something.
Suzuka shrugged. "Just a sort of advance Happy Father's Day for you."
Yuto stopped walking, just staring at his wife.
"What do you mean, exactly?" He asked very seriously.
Suzuka beamed at him. "I'm pregnant." She said, voice full of excitement that it came out as a whisper.
Yuto gaped at his wife for about half a minute.
"You're..?" Yuto tried to say.
Still grinning, Suzuka said. "I'm two months along."
Feeling his throat froze, he just contented himself with pulling his wife (carefully) into his arms and hugging her very tightly (around her shoulders).
"I love you." He whispered, feeling so very happy just then. "I love you, Suzu."
Suzuka sighed in pure bliss. "I love you, too."
