It was the second semester of Mirai’s third year in Horikoshi High School.
And exactly two years ago, was Ryosuke’s confession. In other words, it was their second anniversary.
She didn’t have to go to school today because she had a photo shoot but she had to see Ryosuke and so she went anyway. It was already in the afternoon and no doubt their classes were over. But she had mailed Ryosuke and he said he’ll be waiting for her at school.
Trying to resist the urge to squeal out of giddiness (‘you’re not his fangirl for Pete’s sake! You’re his girlfriend!’) She entered their classroom where Ryosuke said he would be waiting.
And he was there.
He stood up and made his way towards Mirai.
“Happy 2nd Anniversary, Mirai.” He said softly when he was close enough.
Mirai hugged Ryosuke. “Happy Anniversary, Ryo-chan”
“Wait, I have a gift for you.” Ryosuke pulled back and took a small box from his pocket.
“I hope you’ll like it.” He said handing Mirai the small box.
“Oh my God. Thank you, you shouldn’t have.” Mirai took the small box eagerly and opened it to find a r-needle?
“Uhmm, Ryo-chan, thank you for the… needle?”
“You’re welcome,” He smiled radiantly at her. “But sorry, I have to go. I have soccer practice.”
“Wait Ryo-“ But he was already gone. “chan.”
Mirai looked at her needle again.
“I was excited for this? What am I supposed to do with this?" She sighed. "Why did I ever fell in love with a strange creature?” She complained, but she was sporting a fond smile.
She went to her seat, still looking at her gift.
“There you are!” Mirai was startled by Suzuka’s voice.
“Suzuka-chan, you’re still here?” She looked harried, and she was holding a blue balloon.
“Why is your boyfriend so weird? I was hanging out with Yuto-kun in the music room when he bursts in, gave me this,” She pointed at the balloon, “told me it was an emergency and to give this to you immediately. What the hell is going on?” She ranted.
“He told you to give me a balloon?”
“Yes. Weird. What are you holding, Mirai-chan?” Suzuka asked indicating the needle.
“It’s Ryo-chan’s anniversary gift for me.”
“Oh. I totally forgot! Happy 2nd Anniversary-Wait, he gave you a needle?”
“Yes. And a balloon, it seems.” Mirai pointed at the balloon held by Suzuka.
“Wait! I think he’s actually trying to be sweet!”
“By giving me a balloon and a needle?”
“No, I meant,” And Mirai was astonished to see Suzuka so giddy, “Maybe you’re supposed to pop the balloon!”
“Oh. I didn’t think of that. Do you think so?”
“Let’s try it.”
Suzuka passed the balloon to Mirai. It did seem that something was inside.
Cautiously, she pricked the balloon. A picture and a paper fell.
She picked it up and saw that it was a picture of Ryosuke and her during TGQ S. She picked the paper up and realized it was a letter from Ryosuke.
Mirai-chan, the first time we met was when we were in TGQ SP. We didn’t really talk much then because I didn’t know how to approach you and you were always with Kamiki. I never realized it but I think I started liking you then. I’m so happy that I met you that day.
Suzuka was already squealing even before Mirai finished reading the letter.
“Aww... That’s so sweet of him!” Suzuka said.
“It is.” Mirai said, her face broken with a wide a grin.
“But what does that mean? Is that a ball?”
Mirai didn’t notice it but there was a small ball drawn at the bottom of the paper.
“Yes. I think so. Maybe-“
“There’s more! And the second one is in the gym! Let’s go, Mirai-chan!”
Mirai let Suzuka dragged her through the school, towards Horikoshi Gym. It seems her body is in autopilot. The only thoughts running through her head was, “Ryosuke, Ryosuke, Ryosuke…”
They entered the gym and found Umika there. She was holding a yellow balloon.
“Am I allowed to know what’s going on now?” Umika said irritably. “Mirai-chan, you’re boyfriend is so annoying-“ She stopped her rant when she saw her friend’s beaming faces.
“There is more!” Suzuka squealed.
“What?” Umika asked, confused.
“It’s their anniversary. This is Yamada’s gift for Mirai!” Suzuka explained.
All irritation for the young idol apparently forgotten, Umika joined Suzuka in the squealing and gushing. “That’s so sweet!”
“Pop the balloon now, Mirai-chan!” Suzuka urge.
Mirai obliged.
From the balloon came a letter and a strawberry keychain.
Mirai read the letter.
We got to work together again in TGQ Renzoku. I was so happy then. Moreover, we’ve became friends. You became one of my best friends. I was so pleased when you tried to bake a strawberry cake for me after filming. You apologized and said it didn’t turn out well but I think it was very delicious. Thank you for that.
“Mirai-chan, there’s more! He drew a flower at the back! That must mean the next one’s in the garden!” Mirai heard Suzuka said.
“I’m so envious! He’s so sweet!” Umika gush.
“Yeah, I didn’t know he’s capable of doing something like this!” Suzuka added.
“Hey!” Mirai scolded.
“I think that was actually a compliment.” Umika giggled.
“It was.” Suzuka smirked. “But let’s go to the garden now!”
With Suzuka leading, the three girls left the gym and went to the garden.
As expected, they saw someone holding a balloon: Chinen.
“You were in on this and you never told me!” Umika pouted at Chinen.
“I’m sorry Umi-chan, I promised Ryo-chan I wouldn’t tell. Here you go Mirai.” Chinen said, giving Mirai the pink balloon.
Without any further ado, Mirai pierced the balloon with her needle.
A letter and something wrapped in plastic fell.
She picked them and read the letter first.
I felt really lucky when I found out enrolled in the same school and we were going to be in the same class. We grew even closer and during the second semester, I finally told you how I felt. Then you said you felt the same way. That was one of the happiest days of my life. The rest was the seven hundred thirty days I lived knowing you were mine. I love you so much, Mirai.
Mirai tear up. Ryosuke wasn’t really fond of saying his feelings. It was the first time Mirai was learning about all of this.
“I love you, too, Ryo-chan.” She whispered.
She opened the wrapper and saw a memory card inside.
She looked at Chinen questioningly.
“I’m sorry Mirai-chan, Yama-chan told me not to give clues. You’ll just have to go to our classroom first.” Chinen said.
The four of them went back to their classroom and found Yuto holding the fourth balloon.
“Why am I not surprised?” Suzuka said crossly at Yuto.
“Suzu-chan, sorry. Yama-chan made me promised not to tell anyone.” Yuto flashed his puppy eyes to Suzuka.
“I guess I’ll forgive since it’s for my best friend.” Suzuka said and Yuto beamed.
“Here’s your balloon, Mirai.” Yuto said as he passed the balloon to Mirai.
Mirai pricked the balloon and another letter and an envelope fell.
She opened the envelope and found an earphone. She shoved her curiosity for the time being, and started reading the letter.
The letter was written at the back of an old Hey! Say! JUMP concert ticket.
I just wanted to say thank cause you went to our Tokyo Dome Concert. I know you were busy that time but you still found a way to be able to come and watch. It means a lot to me-heck I think that’s the main reason I cried that night. I love you, Mirai, but you know that already.
Mirai realized she’s falling in love with Ryosuke all over again. Anyone would fall in love if this was done to them. Mirai’s feelings were all jumbled: she’s happy, she’s moved, she’s giddy, but she wants to cry.
“He’s whipped.” Yuto’s voice broke Mirai’s musings.
He smiled at her. “Go to the rooftop. Ryo-chan’s there, with the last balloon.” He said.
“Go.” Suzuka said.
“We’ll stay here.” Umika added.
“Happy Anniversary again, Mirai-chan.” Chinen said.
“Thank you, guys.” Mirai said.
Mirai went upstairs and there saw Ryosuke with a big white balloon.
She rushed towards him and hugged him.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you…” She said incessantly.
Ryosuke chuckled. “Take your balloon first.” He said but he didn’t let go of her.
Mirai pulled back and took the balloon. She pierced it and two small boxes fell.
“Two gifts for our two years together.” Ryosuke said.
Mirai sniggered. “Then why five balloons?”
“For the five years I was lucky enough to have had you a part of my life.” Ryosuke shrugged.
Mirai giggled more loudly. “I don’t know if I want to laugh cause you’re so cheesy or cry cause you’re so sweet.”
“I think I’ll prefer you laughing.”
Mirai smiled at him and opened the bigger of the two boxes.
Inside was Mickey Mouse’s head.
“What’s this?” Mirai asked.
“It’s an MP3 player. I saw it and thought you’d like it.”
“Ah. So that’s what the earphone was for.”
“Yeah, and the memory card.”
“You..?” Mirai started and Ryosuke nodded. “You sang a song for me!”
Mirai had always asked Ryosuke to sing her a song but he had always refused.
Mirai was tearing up again.
Ryosuke took the smaller box and opened it. Inside was a silver necklace with a butterfly pendant.
“Wow…”
Mirai took the necklace out to take a better looked.
Ryosuke pointed at his neck, “I have a similar one.”
“It’s beautiful. Thank you. I love it.”
She lifted up the necklace in front of Ryosuke, “Help me?”
Ryosuke smiled at her. He took the necklace and put it on Mirai. He didn’t withdraw his hands and just let it rest on Mirai’s nape.
Mirai cuddled to him. She took her MP3 and put the earphones on her and Yamada’s ears.
They listened to Ryosuke’s song together.
“Just an ordinary song
For a special girl like you
From a simple guy
Whose so in love with you…
But deep inside of me is you
You give life to what I do
All those years may see you through
Still I'll be waiting here for you
If you have time
Please lend an ear
To this ordinary song”
For the whole duration of the song, they didn’t let go of each other.
“I love you so much, Ryo-chan. Thank you.” Mirai said, still hugging Ryosuke.
“You're welcome. But I think I used up all my mush for this day. I’ll have to think of something else when I propose to you.” He said the last word so softly that if Mirai wasn’t hugging him, she would not have heard.
Mirai pulled back, “Propose?”
“Crap. I said that out loud?” Ryosuke said looking sheepish.
“Yes, you did!” Mirai couldn’t hold her laughter.
“Well, I’ll have to propose to you someday won’t I?” Ryosuke said a little defensively.
Mirai smiled at him. “Yes, I’d like that.”
“You’ll say yes?” Ryosuke asked hopefully.
“I think so.” Mirai said, beaming.
“You do realize we’re practically engaged now?”
“No way, buy me a ring first!” Mirai stuck her tongue at him.
end.
